Hi I am new to this site and trying to keep a diary and inform others what has happened to my daughter.
My 8 year old Gabriella has been suffering from high Aso titres for 4 years now. It started off as a small rash, which led me to the dermatologist. The dermatologist then took a biopsy of her rash, which came back non specific. Oh the answers we wished for but had none. Off to the Rheumatologist, here ANA came back positive and more tests proved she had a high ASO titre which means she has a past strep throat infection. Compared to Rheumatic fever, she does have low grade fevers, the rash, constant joint pain. She is on penicllin for over a year now, which has not helped her levels go down, and now with another strep infection they want to start her on penicllin shots to prevent her from getting heart disease. I am constantly at the cardiologist to check her heart and constantly reading and emailing all types of doctors to get any answer. I don't know where else to turn. Hopefully this blog will open my mind to any new imput from everyone. I appreciate you reading my blog. Thank you

Do any of the tests you're doing test for allergies to foods, like wheat (gluten), corn, soy, or dairy? That may be causing recurring infections (food allergies, that is). Is she hasn't been tested, her symptoms seem like she could be suffering from a food allergy. If she hasn't been tested, see if it's possible to test for food allergies, OR you can try to eliminate wheat, corn, soy, and dairy and see how she does, then bring one food back into her diet one at a time to see which one could be the problem food.
Long term antibiotic use is kind of scary! When I was 15, I was given tetracycline long-term for my acne...then I got an ulcer (from what I know now as H. pylori bacteria) because my immunity was non-existent because of the antibiotics. The possible good news is that I don't think penicillin weakens immunity like a majority of antibiotics, but I"m not 100% sure, so you may want to do more research on penicillin to see if it weakens immunity.
Have you looked into probiotics? Also try eliminating sugar and refined carbohydrates from her diet if you haven't already...when those foods are consumed, immunity weakens and the sugars attract viruses and bacteria. If I knew this growing up, my health would have been so much better, but I've only recently discovered this, and have cut out sugar and refined carbs only since the beginning of this year. Good luck!
We tested for allergies. Only thing allergic to is Dogs and Cats, She has yearly endoscpies because of reflux, and a hiatl hernia she has to check on, she has been tested for Chrons, celiac. She also takes a probiotic i give her because of the antibiotic I dont want her to get a yeast infection. Thank you for your advice, But while I think you are correct in the aspect of the sugar, refined sugar intake, I dont know think that wll help in her case, being the doctors told me there was nothing I could do for this. This type of infection in her body can cause Pandas, (attack her brain,) kidney problems, heart disease nothing with the food. Thank you for reading my story and thank you for your response.
GreenFish has a lot of good ideas. What does her pediatrician say?
Melissa.
Her pediatricain wants me to go to another childrens hospital to see what they say. He believes the rash is a strep rash, they diagnosed it erythema margium. Her strep levels are extremely high and have always been for the last 4 years, they have never been normal and my pediatrician thinks we are missing something. She has a past EBV virus as well, her CRP which is inflammation in her body is extremely high as well, my doctor thinks she should be on prednisone.
I am not a DR, but agree with your pediatrician for getting a 2nd opinion. Kind of like a clean slate with a fresh perspective.
Melissa.
You're welcome, and thank you for reading my responses and having an open mind.
I agree, too, about the 2nd opinion!
Well, it never hurts to change one's nutrition, you never know what will happen unless you try. I started improving my diet, which was less than stellar, and my muscle spasm improved, my pain went down, and I think my immunity is stronger, we'll see with this upcoming fall/winter!
We're conditioned in this country to listen to what the doctor says, so if the doctor says it, it must be true, then we don't try anything out on our own. That was the case in the book Anticancer: A New Way of Life, where the doctor/author (who fought and beat cancer himself!) says that so many doctors tell their paitents that diet has nothing to do with their cancer, so they can go on eating anything they want to (candy, processed foods, no fruits, no veggies). But this doctor/author says that's terrible advice because so many people have been able to fight cancer and keep it from returning by changing their diet and eating anti-cancer foods! So my POV is, if people can fight cancer with food, then anything is possible!
One book to start out with that inspired me is Super Immunity by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (his newest book), his other (older) book Eat to Live is supposed to be just as good, but I haven't picked it up yet (you can check it out at your library and don't have to spend money on it). (http://www.drfuhrman.com/)
Some other good ones to see if you can check out: Never Get Sick Again by Raymond Francis (http://beyondhealth.com/) and Anticancer: A New Way of Life (http://www.anticancerbook.com/)
