Healthcare is a right, not a priviledge. How can we let human beings suffer and die, or get into financial ruin and lose their home because they get into an accident or acquire a "costly" disease?
I'm a "disabled" veteran. I put disabled in quotes because I don't consider myself disabled, I'm only 10% disabled according to the Veterans Administration. That means that my healthcare is paid for for the rest of my life. It's like I'm experiencing what universal healthcare would be. It's paid for by you and me and my husband through federal taxes. So thank you to everyone out there. You are supporting all disabled veterans. I don't have to worry about premiums, copays, deductables. I don't even fully understand what all that means! When I was in the Army in my 20s, if I got sick, I would just go see an Army doctor and flash my ID. Same now. When I go in to see a doctor, I sign in with my VA ID card. The only thing I pay for is Rxs, which is currently $8 for a 30 day Rx.
The VA doctors are excellent, for the most part. They work part time serving veterans, and part time at a local hospital or university hospital. I recently changed doctors without any problems. I can see a chiropractor regularly through the VA Healthcare system. They allow walk-in appointments if you come down with something serious that day (they say they can't guarantee you'll be seen, but I've been seen each time I've walked in!). Sometimes your appointment can be far off in the future, but nothing extreme. They can always make time for you.
I don't understand why President Obama couldn't go "all the way" and just proposed universal healthcare. Is it because the insurance companies are so powerful?!?! Will this country ever adopt universal healthcare?
My husband and mother-in-law are from Canada, and they love the universal healthcare system there. They've never had any problems. My husband doesn't understand why it can't be like that here in the states. He says that you can really see your tax dollars at work. Free medical, beautiful roads, etc. Here in the states, no free medical, potholes and litter on the roads. Our tax dollars are not really shown here! All our tax dollars are going towards endless wars!!!
Anyway, let me get off my soapbox to wish everyone a happy 4th of July...stay safe out there!

Greenfish- First of all, thank you for your service! I am saddened to learn that you are disabled due to that service, but you seem to have an upbeat and optimistic attitude toward trying to live a healthy and productive life in spite of your disability!
And, I agree with you that our country is sorely lacking in regard to health care, and my opinion is that it is due in part to the power of the insurance companies, and then also because our politicians (ALL parties!) are more interested in lining their own pockets, and reaping the "rewards" and "perks" that come with public office, than they are with actually WORKING for the benefit of the people who elect them!
Happy 4th of July, and thank you, again, to ALL who have served, and continue to serve, in the military to win- and keep- our freedom and independence! May we all find peace in our lives!
Thanks for the reply, lucy.
A few things I wanted to add about Canada. Because its citizens pay taxes toward their healthcare, the medical field focuses a lot on preventive medicine to keep everyone as healthy as possible, therefore less expense. Here, it's as if they want you to get sick and stay sick so you can keep shelling out your hard-earned cash to them.
The government makes sure that all natural and processed foods contain IODIZED SALT for good thyroid health (of course processed foods aren't the greatest, but still, it's better than just plain salt like products here in the US).
The government also bans products or ingredients that have been proven to be harmful or have the potential to harm. They have banned high fructose corn syrup completely, as well as certain artificial food dyes (I think...). Also, they've banned Monsanto dairy products that are chock full of antibiotics and hormones. Just look up Monsanto online or watch the documentary "Food, Inc." to get a disturbing picture of Monsanto.
