Chronic Stuffy Nose

I've been dealing with chronic stuffiness for years.  My allergist gave me steroid nasal sprays, but often it was uncomfortable to lay down at night because I couldn't breathe.  A few months ago, it dawned on me that the stuffiness was worse on the days that I ate bananas.  I stopped eating bananas, and the sinus inflammation has abated.  I've stopped using steroids and switched to a saline spray.  As an added bonus, my incidence of migraines has dropped.  Your body can react to foods in ways other than producing histamines, so experiment with eliminating foods to determine the cause of sinus inflammation and your personal migraine triggers.

JMaude,

Are you allergic to Latex?  Bananas contain latex in the peels and some people with latex alergies should not eat them..When you wrote your post I was just curious if you knew whether or not you had a Latex allergy.  You are absolutely right about foods we eat having the possibility to affect us.  Good for you that you were able to see the correlation between the bananas and nasal stuffiness.  More than likely the inflamation in your nose was a hystamine reaction.  I have recently developed an allergy to grapes, I have a latex allergy so I avoid bananas.  I get migraines from time to time, but I haven't ever noticed a connection between something I ate and migraines, sometimes though I have noticed my bloodpressure is up when I get a migraine, and I have yet to figure out if I get the migraine due to the Blood pressure, or if my bloodpressure is elevated due to the pain of the migraine.  I have noticed that my bloodpressure is higher when I eat foods with high sodium, like chineese food.  I don't eat it often because I know it's bad for me, but I really like it.  Good Luck to everyone.

I'm not allergic to latex.  And my banana problem isn't actually an allergy.  Once I figured out the correlation between food and some of my health issues, I had my allergist run an entire panel of tests on foods.  The only one that causes a histamine reaction is soy.  I just get inflammation from certain foods (cashews trigger my asthma, bell pepper causes really bad migraines).  It makes eating out hell.

Have you ever used a sinus rinse kettle, also known as a netti pot?  It uses gravity to pour a water solution (100% natural) in one nostril, through the sinuses, and out the other nostril. You will feel great relief, it is very effective and involves no drugs.  You can pick one up at walgreens.  Be sure the water is not too hot and not too cold.  You have to practice getting the head tilt correct, buy once you get the hang of it you'll be on your way to breathing easy.
