I keep hearing the show promoting SPF 15. Lately I have been wearing SPF 45. But wonder if it’s necessary. Plus, and forgive me guys this is a ladies thing, but the make up I wear has a SPF of 20. So does this mean I’m getting an SPF of 65? Does wearing layers of sunscreen make a difference? Does too much sunscreen block the production of vitamin D? What are your thoughts? Take care, lynn

There is a strong history of skin cancer in my family so I have always worn SPF 15. My doctor told me that anything above that is useless. Same doctor diagnosed me with a Vitamin D deficency that was making my arthritis worse and said the sun block does block the Vitamin D we would otherwise absorb from the sun. I have a tendency to sunburn quickly but have had no problems with SPF15. Doctor put me on a prescription strength Vitamin D and I have more energy and the pain from the RA is much easier now. Hope this helps answer your question.

Denise,
Thank you for your feedback. Think I will cut back on sunblock.
By the way, how are you doing now?
Take care,
lynn
I thought, and don't quote me on this, that Dr. Lisa said to go out for 10 minutes, unprotected to get the vitamin D. Any more then that, use sunblock. I haven't heard that over 15SPF doesn't work? hmmm . I use SPF 45 sport because especially in the summer when I hike. My makeup is SPF20 and it seems to be fine.
Cheers,
