Irlen -Not Dyslexia

After watching the Jan. 13 show with Henry Winkler, I just had to post that the slides shown were not typical of dyslexia but of Irlen. I am a Dyslexia Specialist and also an Irlen Diagnostician. Thank goodness that Irlen is finally getting some recognition! As a retired educator, reading specialist and dyslexia specialist, who has known about and supported Irlen for over 15 years, I am hopeful that many more students will be reached. Henry Winkler is a wonderful speaker for dyslexia but the slides that were shown are slides about Irlen not dyslexia. Please do not assume that when a person is struggling with reading it is dyslexia. If the person cannot see the page correctly, no matter how good the dyslexia program, they will not experience success! Eye doctors are not trained for Irlen as it is not shown in their vision. Many Irlen sufferers do not need glasses for vision, only the correct color to help the light hit the eye in the correct place. If you are a parent reading this, please look at www.irlen.com and see if this described your child or you. It is hereditary! Please help all students get the help they need to succeed. As Henry Winkler says, many students think they are stupid or dumb and quit trying. I can't tell you how badly I felt when I discovered that my middle child who had been identified with dyslexia when he was in fourth grade was finally diagnosed with Irlen as an adult. I felt that I had failed him. Please help us rescue others!
