Labelfree:

"The negative calorie phrase refers to a small list of foods (shown below) which  contain such little energy that the body uses more energy to digest and absorb the energy and nutrients. This means that from eating these foods alone,  there is potential for a net loss of calories from the body. This negative energy balance is a biological necessity in order to lose weight. "

Yes, it is true, there are empty calorie foods and some that take more to digest than to eat (ie, negative calories).  IMO, I would not exclude those with empty calories.  For "negative calorie" foods, google "negative calorie foods" and it will come up with some.  BUT, I'd still include those when counting calories.

Great, thank you both :D

As for the counting calories of fruits and vegetables. I've heard about foods with empty calories. So foods that take as much energy in your body to eat and digest the foods, resulting in already burning more calories than that particular food has in itself.

Is this really true? Then would those foods with empty calories be excluded?

Yes, count ALL calories including liquids like labelfree said.  They all count.  What I do is focus on is how clothes fit vs a number on a scale.  I found I got too wrapped up in a number so I gave it up.  Maybe once a month I will weigh but hardly.  Diet soda -- look at the label for that, if it says 0 then it has 0.  Try not to drink too much of it because it isn't great for you IMO.

Melissa.
