I have a friend who was brought to the USA (we're located in Chicago) from Mexico as a child. He's been here ever since, and he's American in every way except on paper. He has a dark vertical line running down his thumb nail. We're concerned that he could have Subungal Melanoma. Although he works two jobs and goes to school, he is not covered by any type of health insurance. He's only 24, and needs this issue looked at...where can someone in his situation get help? I don't want him to ignore it because he's uninsured. If it is serious, he needs help. If he waits too long because of no insurance, it could become very serious, if it isn't already. Where can he go, who can help him?! Please help us!

have him call your the billing office at your local county hospital and ask to speak with the financial assistance office. They are the ones that will know where to direct him to get the help he needs. Learned this by trial and error. (Very long story behind this one :o\ )
Can you set up a payment plan with a DR after seeing him/her?
Melissa.
That is something else I also learned over the past few years - many doctors offices and clinics give major discounts for those without insurance.-That may also be a good place to start.
Maybe he can even find a free clinic. I only know of them because a friend of mine was a down-and-out, unemployed drug addict and needed to see a doctor, so he was able to find a free clinic in a big city. Not sure if your friend will apply, as he has two jobs...not quite sure how a free clinic works...
there's also a free clinic look up but it depends which state you live in but google it. it might help.
