About Me
I am a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator working at the New York Presbyterian Hospital and in private practice. I specialize in weight mangament, heart health, diabetes, PCOS, sports nutrition, and preventative nutrition. My goal is to help people learn how to make permanent changes in their eating and exercise behaviors.
I have started a blog called citygirlbites that provides accurate and practical nutrition information for "girls and guys on the go". Some of my most popular posts include:
Calories in sushi, calories in Chinese food, dealing with a hangover, minimize your muffin top, calories in alcohol, healthy meals on the run. Do a search on my blog to find these and other helpful tips. Check out my website and blog:
A little about me personally, I love living in NYC. There is so much to see and do ... never a dull moment! I love spending time with my friends, working on my blog and cycling (my passion!).

Hi! Hope you are well and enjoying the new year. I have a question I can't find the answer for anywhere on the net.....
I have low potassium despite taking 30 mEq daily in pill form, eat 2 bananas a day, drink milk, eat yogurt and so much other fruit it's almost too much. Plus a multivitamin, Ca, Vit D, and magnesium. I've been doing this for at least a month now....(vitamins for awhile now though) at first it was 3.3 (not too too bad but lower than a 4.something which I used to have), then the doctor increased the K+ pills to 3/day, and that is when I started eating the 2 bananas/day etc. I just got my levels back after a month and it was 3.4. There is no way it only went up 0.1 with all I eat and drink I just mentioned. What absorbs potassium so it will absorb better? I know it absorbs in the small intestine but dont know how to absorb it more to get my levels up. My feet curl and calves still are cramped a little and I'd like that to go away too. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks,
Melissa.
Hi Martha, just decided to write to say hi and see how you were. Wondered how the nutrition field is going. Write when you can!
Melissa.
I don't actively practice, so no I don't keep up with the latest nutrition. I grew up in Bedford, now living in Acton. I loved the learning and the fast-paced learning, but never practiced. See below comment.

Hi,
No I went to Framingham State College. I loved it there. Learned a lot, graduated as a licensed dietitian. But due to medical/psychological reasons I couldn't practice. Did you grow up in MA?
Melissa.
Did you read Larissalle's profile on Vitamin D? What do you think of it all?
Melissa.
Hey Labelfree,
That is awesome that you keep losing? How are you doing it?
Hope everything else is going well. Unfortunately haven't been spending too much time on this board ... not enough hours in the day!
Martha (aka citygirlbites)

Thanks!! I do actually take multi vitamins, I take a packet of them from shaklee and hope that they are good for me lol Also I cook with tofu at least once a week and I drink soy milk and use soy creamer in my coffee that i drink once in a while. I much prefer rice milk for my cereal though in the mornings. Also every morning I make a smoothie out of silken tofu frozen berries frozen mango a banana and rice milk. I just hope I am getting enough but I will certainly do my research. If I ever get time between school work and the gym I will make an appointment because I am living about 40 minutes outside the city in Rockland county. I appreciate any advice you have!! Thanks
