Plain Greek yogurt is loaded with protein, much more than regular yogurt. Two great ways to eat it: 1) Add Truvia and a few berries and it tastes like cheesecake for your sweet tooth. 2) As a fantastic dip from Ina Garten with cucumbers, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, dill and garlic that’s great with veggies or pita chips, if allowed. Here’s the link for the recipe. Easy to make slight modifications to fit the program: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/easy-tzatziki-with-toasted-pita-crisps-recipe/index.html |

Do you know where i can buy greek yogurt? i look in walmart but didn’t see it.. would love to know who has it.. thanks :) |

Greek yogurt can be found in any of the major grocery stores now. I’ve bought some at QFC, Safeway, Fred Meyer, etc. It is in the same section as the regular yogurt, not in some special deli section as some of the stores have. |
|

Actually, that’s not true. I live in South Dakota, and it’s very hard to find, even at the chain stores here. I have seen it at Walmart though (2 hour drive from where I live). |

@httpgal & @breannebens: More and more brands are being introduced on the market, including one from Dannon. Since Dannon is such a popular brand, you might have some luck finding it in your supermarket. If not, ask the store manager to order it for you. If they are already stocking Dannon yogurt, it would be a simple request for them to fulfill! Hope this helps. |

@caroltrissel: “Fit For Life” by the Diamonds came out in the early 80’s. If I remember, you could only eat fruit (nothing else) in the morning before noon. Had to do with digestion like your daughter said. Also, that gnawing feeling will go away if you eat a little protein. Sounds like you’ve accomplished a lot already. You will reach that goal! |

@chb2011, thank you for the suggestion, but believe me I have already been down that road. In the town I live in, the only yogurt I can get ordered in is Yoplait Original Berry Flavor (yeah, that’s right – apparently they can’t special order any other flavors, much less greek yogurt or even plain nonfat). I’ve given up and ordered a yogurt machine. I only posted because it’s presumptious to assume that everyone has access to the same foods and the statement “greek yogurt can be founds in any of the majoyr grocery stores now” is only a reality in major cities, but not necessarily for the rest of us. And yes, while most grocery store managers are willing to work with you to get things ordered, they have limitations based on their suppliers and also minimum orders they need to place in the event they actually CAN get you the item you want. It’s a source of frustration with this diet, especially when it comes to recipes like the power cookie. |

@httpgal: Maybe this is a question for Dr. Mike in the new forum called “Ask Your Questions”. He’s probably been asked this before. Good luck to you. By the way, SD is a beautiful state with some wonderful history! |

I buy mine at Krogers here in Indiana. They have it with honey to. I buy it with the honey. Not as bitter. I even put a dab on my sweet tater tonight. It was great! I also add berries or even sesame seeds, unsalted to it. |

caroltrissel….good for you!!! That is fantastic! Gives me more motivation here….I am down 8 since the 5th of January. During the flu and falling off the wagaon once. I feel so much better. Hard to believe that sugar was making me feel sluggish like that. |

Check out Wal-Mart and Kroger, they have Greek yogurt. There is Kroger brand also. If they don’t have it, talk to your store Manager he/she will order it for you. |
|

Thanks a lot tinua I will take your advice. |

|
chb2011 I checked out the Ina Garten recipe and it sounds great but will have to substitute the pita chips with veggies. Thanks for that great tip. |
|
|
thanks chb2011 but it wasn’t a question for Dr. Mike, just an observation. I solved the issue by ordering my own yogurt machine and i’m now making greek yogurt at home – it’s way better than the storebought stuff and always fresh :) |

My favorite is plain Fage Greek Yogurt. It’s comes in 0% or 2%. I love it with fresh or frozen fruit, or if it’s after 2:00pm, mixed with Truvia. Truvia is a natural product made from the stevia plant and even tastes great sprinkled on fruit. How many sweeteners can you say that about?! |
|
|
I found Yoplait Greek 2X protein 0% Fat. I get Smuckers Sugar Free Blackberry Jam and put 1 tsp. in the yogurt. It is awesome! Now the yogurt Machine sounds good. Where can you get them? |

You don’t need a yogurt machine to make yogurt. I make it in a metal Thermos® and wrap it in a towel and set in a warm place. It comes out perfectly. I start with powdered milk. You can put it in a mason jar w/coffee filter and drain the whey and you have what is a lot like greek yogurt. I can post a recipe later. |

Wow boonesar that is amazing. I never knew making your own yogurt would be that easy. Looking forward to your recipe. |

I bought mine on Amazon.com for $19 – you can pay 2-3X that amount, but the one I bought seems to work just fine – makes 7 cups at a time and the glass jars all have plastic storage lids. |

Thick Yogurt Recipe 4 cups of warm water (110 deg to 115 degrees F) temperature is very important (to warm it kills the starter to cold it doesn’t work either) 2 1/3 cups instant nonfat dry milk 1/4 cup fresh, unflavored yogurt (this is your starter you can use your homemade later as a starter as long as it’s not over 5 days old) Organic is best but regular works too. Reach for the one on the back of the shelf with the newest date. Fresh is very important. Yes, you can use flavored but all your recipe will be flavored slightly. Make sure the yogurt is active bacteria, those sweet kids yogurt crap won’t work
Combine water and dry milk in a medium-sized bowl and mix thoroughly. Stir in the yogurt or starter. Incubate using any method you like. But I do this and it is quite reliable.
Thermos method. Once starter has been stirred into the lukewarm milk, pour it into a wide-mouth thermos, put on the lid, and let it sit 4-6 hours before refrigerating. I wrap in a bath towel to retain more heat. The temperature is controlled for you. Do not disturb. if you disturb it it will separate and look like cottage cheese. it’s ok to eat but it look gross. You can use pure yogurt culture I find it at health food stores but I don’t like it as well. It takes longer. When you go to check it take the lid off slowly and tilt it until it looks thick, if not put it back on and wait another hour or so. The yogurt will keep 8 days under refrigeration or you can freeze it. Make new within 5 days with your homemade yogurt as your starter.
YOu can put yogurt in a mason jar or colander lined with a coffee filter and it will drain the whey off. Then you will have a more greek style yogurt. Thick! or Yogurt Cream Cheese some call it. I use this for dips and sour cream replacement.

Thank you so much for that recipe boonestar. I copied and said it. I can’t wait to try it. Thanks again. You may want to put it on the blog with recipes. |

We in Ontario Canada can get Liberte 0% plain greek yogurt at Loblaws Superstore or Costco. If you use the plain, you can add your fruits for a desert or herbs and seasonings as a dip. |
