The Docs missed the boat today concerning the chronic itch the older lady had; they should have referred her to a dermatologist.  An older friend of mine had that chronic itch on her back, same place, and she’d wear the fabric off her clothes from scratching it.  She finally went to a dermatologist who said her nerves endings were over-active and misfiring.  She had a laser treatment, which basically destroyed the nerves in that spot and stopped her itching.  Total of three visits to the doctor after years of misery.

They absolutely misssed it. Sounds like it of neurogenic origin, nerve irritation.

I agree with you.  I had the same problem, Notalgia Paresthetica, and dermatoligist cleared it up with a rx ointment.  Docs should have consulted one themselves!

How about a recuring side itch that feels like it’s itching on the INSIDE of your skin?  You can scratch the spot, but it never helps or gives any relief because you can’t get deep enough.  It’s not a common occurrence, but does happen every few months.  It drives me nuts!!!!

Hello everyone,

Its seems to me that the comments on the message board seem to make more sense to me then what the Doctors were describing as examples as to why some people suffer with a constant itch.

My itch seems to be a little different and I was hoping someone could help

I’ve had a constant itch on the left side of my back, below my shoulder blade for years now. My problem is the itch I have feels like it’s underneath the skin not on top. The itch gets so intense and I can’t seem to get any relief. I even went out and purchased a steel letter opener with sharp ridges to use as a back scratcher but it still doesn’t seem to relive the itch. On many occasions I have actually scratched the surface so hard that it started to bleed, and yet I didn’t even feel it, because the area always feels numb as if the nerve is dead under the skin. I don’t recall if I have ever damaged this area, I don’t think so, and I have never had a bruise in the area or rash. I am completely stumped. I mentioned it to my doctor quite a few years ago and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders and said that it was probably just a dead nerve and didn’t seem concerned.

As I mentioned about I’ve had this itch for years and the only change I’ve have noticed is that the area is increasing in size and it seems to burn now under the skin.

Any suggestions that may help or have any of you ever heard of this before?

Thanks

My dermatologist diagnosed my back itch as Notalgia Paresthetica (google it).  He prescribed Lidocaine ointment and it worked miracles.  I used it a for a few weeks and the itching stopped.  That was almost a year ago and I’ve had only a couple of minor re-occurences. Please see your dermatologist before you get an infection or worse!  Good luck.

Anyone having cronic itching, please ask your Dr. to test for hepititis. I suffered for years with cronic itching before a Dr. checked  my bloodwork further. I now have cirhossis of the liver.  You can go years with no symptoms. Then when it is found out it can be to late. I am looking to a liver transplant in the future. Itching , unexplained tiredness, pain on right side and just feeling lousy are all symptoms.I do not know why doctors don’t suggest getting tested for hepititis. It is an epidemic. Maybe not enough money made on it.
