WHY WON'T THEY HELP ME!!!

I'm at 20 year old female, with extremly serve pelvic pain and serve bleeding that has progessed over the last 7 weeks and it is just getting worse. I went to my OB/GYN and he told me that he wanted to do all this thing to me to find outr why because he had no idea what was wrong with me, by the way this visit was visit number 2 after 5 weeks of this pain and bleeding, right after he said this he told me to go talk to the billing lady because I have no insurance and he couldn't do anything for me until I had insurance. I work part-time, sometimes I get a lot of hours other times I won't work for 2 weeks, but the medicaid office told me I make to much money for medicaid but I have family planning, but family planning doesn't cover me visiting a REAL OB/GYN. So I could not get insurance because I cannot afford to buy my own health insurance. So 2 weeks later, 7 weeks into the pain and bleeding, I go back to my OB/GYN because the pain and bleeding had gotten worse and I had been passing out and throwing up. The nurse seemed very concerned, but when Dr. Kendell walked in he looked at me and said "My hands are tied." He couldn't help me because I had no insurance, he did a half ass pelvic exam and when he pushed on my pelvic area and I screamed in pain and he did nothing he just kept talking and left the room. I asked for an ultrasound but he told me I had to talk to the lady about my insurance and they told me they couldn't do it that day because the tech wasn't there and it would cost $180 and I had to be able to pay for it before they could do it. So my mother took me to the Pitt Memorial Hospital ER, where the doctor found that I was orthostatic and I needed fluid replacement, I received 2 liters of fluid and the doctor had to up my morphine because my pain was unbearable. I understand that the ER doctor couldn't do anything extra because she corrected the current problem but she was very concerned about me and my problem so she referred my to ECU OB/GYN. So the next day I called them, they did not have the referals from the ER from the previous night, and they left a note for the nurse to call me back and make an appointment. The next day, I still had no phone call and was still in pain crying myself to sleep, praying that God would help me get through this. I called the office and was put on hold so I hung up and called again, I was put on hold so I hung up and called again I finally got someone to listen to me, I told them what was going on and I really needed to be seen, but then they sent me to the nurse assistant or something to leave yet another message so I told her the story from the beginning and she said she was leaving the note for the nurse to call me back and she told me the times the nurse would be making her calls, I felt that I was going to be left out again because the nurses assistant told me the nurse was going to call current patients first. So I called the ER back and spoke with a lady and told her the story, she then told the charge nurse and the charge nurse called ECU OB/GYN and told them I needed to be seen ASAP. About 30 minutes later the nurse from ECU OB/GYN called me and asked me what was wrong so I once again told her my story and told her I really needed to be seen, she told me she would see of she could fit me in sometime this week or early next week. Her next question was one I have heard to many times before, "Who is your insurance with?" I replied "I have none." She then told me she would see if she could fit me in. Later that day, she had not called so I called them again, they patient representive went and asked the nurse about my appointment and the nurse told her she did not have time to find me and appointment, even tho I sit at home in pain and bleeding and crying praying that maybe somebody out there will help me, the nurse said she would call me tomorrow with an appointment. My questions are....will I be here tomorrow? How many times will I pass out and throw up by the time she calls me? Will my appointment be soon or will I have to keep waiting? WHY WON'T ANYBODY HELP ME?

I don't understand this because I am an EMT-Intermediate and I help people all the time and I work hard and do my best and every patient, I never ask them if they have insurance and I never treat them different because they don't have insurance, I do my best and what I can for every patient, I help them no matter what, but why can't people help me.

What state do you live in? I think you could apply for Medicaid in any state....and if you get they will back pay from the start you applied for it. It depends on your income, but if your part time you may be eligible to receive it, its worth checking out.

Honey check out where you live at city or county social services. Here In Veags there is a county medical card, and we coul;d use it to get services ...I had multiple surgeries on mine. Call THEM. You may nt qualify for Medicaid due to income. I was VERY and afraid the county hospital would not help me till I found out what to do. They can't just ignore you. I am going to blog something on this that is too long for the comment area.

What does your primary care doc say about it?

Melissa.

hometownEMT-I

My primary care doc told me to go to the OB/GYN, I have already applied for medicaid and got the family planning but was denied the full coverage. I told me old OB/GYN if he did the surgeries he wanted to do my current medicaid has a deductable and the cost of the surgeries would meet it and he told me he didn't know anything about it and when I talked to the billing lady she would not listen me.

Since the medical end isn't helping you at this time, have you thought of any alternative or natural things to help?

hometownEMT-I

No I havent looked at any other ways, I practice medicine and I am a firm believer in knowing when only medicine will help.

But luckily today I called the ECU OB/GYN office again this morning and believe it or not I have an appointment Tuesday March 30 at 1:30. I will let yall know what goes on...hopefully I will get some answers!

I totally understand your pain and being upset.  If I were you I would go BACK TO ER OR at another hospital.  Tell them you have been bleeding 7 weeks and your DR could careless and you are at your wits end.

Also whatever STATE YOU LIVE IN FIND OUT THE MEDICAL STATE BOARDS phone number and call them FOR ADVICE AND ALSO find an ATTORNEY.

OBVIOUSLY YOUR CURRENT OB/GYN is NOT LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR BEST INTRESEST>  CALL A LAWYER who will SUE ON YOUR BEHALF AND ONLY COLLECT only if you get  IF YOU GET DAMAGES!

THIS WHOLE SITUATION IS F UP AND THAT DOCTOR ONLY CARES ABOUT HIS POCKETBOOK NOT YOUR WELL BEING!  BLEEDING 4 7weeks COULD KILL YOU!  GET TO NEW HOSPIAL SOMETHING VERY VERY SERIOUS IS GOING ON WITH YOU BABY.

PLEASE KEEP US POSTED HERE!

Medicaid as far as I know does not have full or partial coverage, you either qualify for it or you don't. Also you HAVE TO go to a physician that accepts medicaid, and you will not have the "deductibles" and costs. It also sounds like you should find new doctors anyhow, I want someone who wants to help me and be there, not someone who is focused on a paycheck.

This makes me SO MAD & sick to my heart!!! You need to get someone else on your side too that can help you...mom, sis, friend, etc? Then go together to the DR & DEMAND to be seen!! It's the LAW that you have to be treated regardless of your situation! And, what happened to the "Hypocratical Oath"?!? If this was me, I'd go SCREAMING until someone listened & helped! I sorta agree with getting a lawyer if needed & go after those who refused treatment. Blood loss is SERIOUS! I'm a former nurse & know! And, I wouldn't waste my breath telling everybody & their brother everything until you see someone in person! Why waste your breath? This just gets me! Keep strong & being your own medical advocate! PRAYING FOR YOU!!

For the past 4 days I have not been bleeding and the pain has easied off a lot! Which is great...I went to the doctor today and she said that the birth control I titrated on from my last doctor maybe working now. And my uterus could be back to normal but she set me up for an appointment in 2 weeks with an ultrasound just to look and make sure she doesn't see anything. The only bad thing is right now I am having pains but they are nothing like they were. She said my uterus was causing the pain and heavy bleeding because I am overweight and that causes the body to produce to much estrogen causing the uterus inner lining to thicken and cause pain and sluff out causing the heavy bleeding. But now I wait to see if its all over and if its not the doctor was talking about inplanting a IUD, Im not sure about it. Let me know what yall think about it!

Actually, private drs. don't have to treat her, but are required to STABILIZE her. But the county or city facilities, or stste fascilities are supposed to treat her. A word of caution here ... having been thru this myself, her "care" might be very limited or basic, and her options small. Personally, I had to sacrifice my need to go back to work, or make money, as did my sister, so I could get medicaid. This girl is caught in the middle, like a lot of people. Some day I'll tell my whole story up here, but I was denied heart bypass, before I got medicaid. They treated me outpatient and medically, but left me waiting for surgery, using so many excuses. When I finally got medicaid, they couldn't get me in there frast enough! I just recently saw a story about a man eho had to divorce his wife, and become indigent to get service.

Have you tried Planned Parenthood? So long as you claim you are using birth control (condoms, pill, implant) they will treat you free of charge for most ob/gyn problems.

I am reading this story which is much like mine was.  I thought I was dying and no one was there to help.  I live in CA. and I went to my county social services office to an alternative to Medi-cal.  Based on your income, they deduct your basic expenses from your income and the difference becomes your co pay.  If you are low income enough, you won't have to pay out of pocket.   I was told I could not go to a specialist even if I could pay cash because if a doctor was treating me and something happened to me and I no longer had insurance, that doctor would be required to continue to treat me regardless of my money situation.  Contact your medical board for your state to report your regular doctor regarding this matter.  My husband and I both lost our jobs, no insurance, and our wonderful county told me that we did not qualify due to us having a retirement plan.  We had to spend down our retirement funds in order to qualify.  We went thru almost $30,000 for prescriptions and dental and doctor bills.  When we finally qualified, my husband got a job but it took six months before any benefits.  Then came tax time and if I didn't keep good records, we were going to be penalized 30% for early withdrawal.  What a nightmare.  No one cared if I lived or died.  I really would like to know how things are now??  When you bleed like that, press down on your finger nails and see if there is any white.  It is a sign of whether you are bleeding to death or not.  They would have to treat you then.  Also, send this incident to your congress representative.  Your local newspaper will have their names and numbers.

Did you finally get things figured out? We live in the same city and state, when I did not have health insurance but needed not see an ob/gyn I was told to go to the health department as I also did not qualify for Medicaid. Please post back to let me know you are doing well!

I am sorry you cannot find help.  I'm fortunate to live in Canada, and Ontario for that matter.  We have the best health care coverage there is in Canada.  It is too bad that the USA does not think that their citizens deserve health care coverage.  I don't know what to tell you because you live in a different country.  I have heard there are some hospitals in the US that take people without insurance.  Perhaps you need to try and find one close by to you and call them to see if they will help.  If not, try speaking to your Representative for your State and see what s/he can do for you.  I know here in Ontario I have called my Member of Provincial Parliament and the Member of Federal Parliament and every time I've called, I have received help.  They are working for you so put them to work.  Best wishes.
