gynecologist

I thought going to gynecologist would help me better to find out why I'm having a heavy period but It was not worth it. I'm going to start with natural alternative ways. I hear good reviews called VItex it's a supplement. The doctor suggest me to do a IUD but I don't think I should do that. I'm not sexually active so The pap smear is not necessary and I never had it done. Using birth control is not right for me because i have a hypertension and migraines. The only option that the doctor told me was to put in the IUD but I told her that I need some time to think about it. After thinking about a lot, I decided not to do the IUD and I'm more into alternative ways so I'm going to try the VItex and see how it goes.

Did your gyn check for polyps?  A friend of mine was having a terribly heavy period, and was found to have polyps.  If you have them they can do some sort of procedure to remove them.  However, the polyps came back and she had to have a hysterectomy because they kept coming back.  NOT saying you have them, just something that crossed my mind.

Even though you are not sexually active, you should have a pap smear at least every 2-3 years because it checks for so many other things ( in my opinion). I also think the IUD is a great way to control heavy periods. I have had one for the last 6 years. Initially I got it because I wanted my tubes tied after I had my daughter but my doctor thought I was too young and suggested the Mirena IUD. After some research I decided to go through with it and by the second month I had a very light period and then eventually none at all and I didn't have any side effects. I didn't realize how great it was until I had it removed and was reminded how heavy my periods were. After 2 months of that, I immediately made an appointment to have another 1 put in. Best thing I could have done. Good luck.

I agree that a pap smear can detect cervical cancer in the early stages, which means 100% recovery and survival.  A gyn can check for polyps, agreed, but also fibroids and many other things.  They can also request lab work to check all your hormone levels.

The IUD is a big step, esp. if you are not sexually active.  When I was researching the Mirena IUD, there were so many people on message boards complaining that it gave them acne, so that kind of scared me off because I've had a life long problem with acne.  I tried NuvaRing with great success.  No acne, VERY LIGHT periods...my gyn suggested you can skip your period for a few months by inserting another one at the end of the NuvaRing cycle.  THAT'S why a gyn is so important...she told me that it is in fact healthy for me to do so, because having so many periods and no children ever can increase my risk of cancer (women who have kids lessen their risk of cancer because they are not having their period for months or years depending on how many kids they have).
