Dessert for Breakfast?
The Doctors discuss a study in which people lost more weight eating chocolate cake for breakfast than those who didn’t.
“[The study] looked at 193 clinically obese patients,” E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork says. “One group ate only a low-carbohydrate, 300-calorie [breakfast]. The other ate a total of 600 calories for breakfast [and] part of that was a piece of chocolate cake,” he explains.
By eating a higher-calorie breakfast, one group showed lower levels of the hunger hormone leptin and remained more satiated throughout the day. Over the course of the study, that group lost significantly more weight. The Doctors explain the importance of eating a healthy breakfast to start your day.

The Doctors are joined by Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of SELF magazine and author of The Drop 10 Diet, to explain the slimming secrets of certain foods.

Cherries: This tart fruit contains anthocyanins, which boost the enzymes in fat cells to help oxidize fat in the body. Cherries also help muscles utilize glucose, which can stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent muscle pain after exercise. In addition to being rich in fiber, the antioxidants help fight inflammation and cherries also act as a natural sleep aid by boosting melatonin production.
Parmesan Cheese: Loaded with protein, parmesan cheese also has more calcium than any other cheese, which assists the body in metabolizing fat. Hard cheeses like parmesan tend to have less lactose, so it’s a great choice for people who are sensitive to dairy.
Steak: A 3.5 ounce lean cut of grade A steak provides 21 grams of protein, the key to building muscle mass and burning more calories. Steak is also a great source of iron and zinc, which is beneficial to your skin’s oil production.
Pumpkin Seeds: Packed with protein, fiber, and heart-healthy fats, pumpkin seeds help fill you up and reduce cravings. One ounce of pumpkin seeds has the same amount of protein as a cup of yogurt. The best way to slim down is always to decrease the amount of calories you’re eating [and] increase the amount of calories that you burn,” Dr. Travis says. But other tricks can be employed to help with weight loss.
The Doctors explain how eating with blue-tinted sunglasses or eating food on a blue plate has been shown to reduce the amount of consumption. The color blue is actually an appetite suppressant.
“Other than blueberries, there aren’t any blue foods in nature,” pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears explains. “So, our bodies aren’t trained to see blue and get hungry.”
Unlike red or yellow, which are appetite-triggering colors that are often associated with fast food restaurants, the color blue can assist to control cravings.

The Doctors reveal that French women will often wear a belt under their clothes and tighten it just before eating. This strategy helps to regulate their portions and maintain their famously thin figures.
"It's as much a mental thing as anything else, it's reminding yourself not to overeat," Dr. Travis says. "Pay attention to internal clues, listen to your hunger, fullfill that hunger and then stop."
