New Procedures for Everyday Problems
Laser for Chronic Pain
More than 86 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Sports medicine specialist Dr. Bradley Frederick, from the International Sports Medicine Institute, demonstrates how high-intensity HIRO laser therapy can relieve 30 to 40 percent of pain after just one treatment.
The HIRO laser simultaneously stimulates and regenerates the cells of the targeted area.
Dr. Frederick explains that the greatest advantage of the HIRO laser is that it can penetrate a targeted area up to a depth of 5 inches -- whereas other lasers rarely reach beyond the dermis -- which can help heal deep-tissue injuries or lower back problems.
“If you can’t hit the tissue with the energy, you’re not going to affect the cell itself,” Dr. Frederick says.
Esteem Implantable Hearing Device
Ten percent of the U.S. population has significant hearing loss. Traditional hearing aids amplify sound, but can prove problematic to its users, as all sounds are amplified indiscriminately.
The Esteem Implantable Hearing System is an alternate to traditional hearing aids and recently received approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The device is implanted behind the ear and below the skin, and probes are inserted into the middle ear. As sound enters the ear canal and hits the eardrum, the probes sense the movement of the eardrum and deliver the sound directly to the inner ear via the hearing bones. The result is a crisp sound.
Otolaryngologist Dr. Jack Shohet is one of three specialists who participated in clinical trials for the device. “My patients experienced an 84 percent improvement in their word recognition scores at 50 decibels of hearing -- which is a very soft conversational level -- than they did with their best hearing aid,” Dr. Shoret reports.
Siblings Andrea and Brent have genetic sensorineural hearing loss and participated in clinical trials for the Esteem Implant. “A hearing aid is just that: it’s an aid. It amplifies. It’s a distorted amplifier,” Brent explains. “The Esteem device is a cochlear stimulator. It takes the anatomy of the middle ear, and it restores it back to its functionality. It’s a life-changer, a miracle.”
“We estimate that 70 to 90 percent of people could actually be a candidate for this type of instrument,” Dr. Shoret says.
Jaundice Phototherapy Treatment
Jaundice, a condition that causes both the skin and the whites of the eyes to yellow, is caused by excess bilirubin in the blood and occurs in 50 to 70 percent of newborns. Babies are born with a little more blood than they need, so as the blood cells start to break down, they release a pigment called bilirubin, turning the baby a yellowish hue. The pigment is usually flushed out in a few days, and the baby will return to flesh tone.
“Sometimes, babies need a little extra help, especially if they’re [born] premature,” pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears says. “They may need something called phototherapy.”
Phototherapy uses narrow-band LED light to help break down the bilirubin in the blood. Dr. Sears demonstrates how the GE BiliSoft™ LED phototherapy system swaddles a baby like a blanket and can be used at home.
In a traditional vasectomy, the vas deference, the tubule that carries sperm from the testes to the penis, is cut.
Urological surgeon Dr. Michael Safir demonstrates how Pro-Vas, a new type of vasectomy, utilizes a titanium clip to block the flow of sperm to the penis and does not require any cutting or cauterization.
The Pro-Vas procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, and most men are able to return to normal activities within a day.

Hot water taken directly from the kitchen sink has a higher risk of containing rust, copper and lead. Lead poisoning can cause harm to the heart, bones and reproductive system. Instead, use cold tap water and bring to a boil to brew a hot cup of tea, coffee or cocoa.
