Difference between these?

What is the difference between exercise-induced anaphylactic shock, and exercise-induced asthma?  Without a day-to-day inhaler and a rescue inhaler I can't exercise because of asthma.  Would I go into anaphylactic shock in any way if I didn't use the inhalers?  I do carry around an epi-pen with me for other reasons but never thought of possibly needing it during exercise. Anyone know? Melissa.

Should health care be based on lifestyle choices?

I found this question on the synopsis page, and thought I'd comment on it ... One thing I read was about giving preferential medical treatment to people who went to the gym and ate healthy. What about people who can't afford a gym/personal trainer/etc, and get their exercise outside by walking or running (or whatever it may be, just not in a gym)?  They still exercise like the people in the gym do, but because...

Unusual Things ER Docotrs find inside people

Whether this is true, I really don't know, but the idea is funny, and someone had to have had the idea, at least to write it.  The act of gerbiling involves a tube up the backside, followed by a gerbil up that tube. Some stories suggest that the gerbil should be declawed as a safety precaution, but the main idea is to have the gerbil burrowing around one's anus long enough to bring about sexual...

Fiber and Water Are not always "what you need"

I know I've written this before, but will write it again ... Fiber and water do not always help with constipation/make you regular and "only wipe once ... in and out in 2 minutes" like the DR stated.  What about the people with bowel problems, such as IBS, IBD, Chrohn's, colitis, etc? I have bad IBS, and lots of fiber with LOTS of water constipate the heck out of me.  If I eat fiber I...

Vagus Nerve Implant and Appetite

(on Friday's show, 4/26/13) This is really interesting.  I was thinking about whether or not I'd actually get this or not.  I don't think I would ever get this implant, but it just caught my attention when it was brought up on the show. Despite being on prescription medication for issues with regards to appetite, I still have problems with it.  It isn't as serious as the examples on show, and it doesn't require pad...

What Causes a Song To Get Stuck in Your Head

This topic is for Monday's show (4/22/13) and I am totally looking forward to it, and hope I can watch it.  I get songs stuck in my head a lot, but have been told they are auditory hallucinations (probably because of mental illness). I guess my question is how can you tell if it is "just" a song getting stuck in your head, or a hallucination?  Is there a difference? Melissa.

Increased Heart Attack Risk ... What about for women?

Today's show said how a MAN with thinning hair has an increased risk for heart attack. What about for WOMEN?  Does a woman's thinning hair also indicate an increased risk of a heart attack? Melissa.

Banned Ingredients Allowed in the US

http://www.wcvb.com/health/-/9848730/19577484/-/g7ixsw/-/index.html?utm_source=hootsuite&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=wcvb%2Bchannel%2B5%2Bboston This is an extremely interesting article about different ingredients that are banned in different countries (not the US though, yet).  These people in the article studied different ingredients for 6 years, and found 13 of them that have been banned in other countries but not here in the US. Melissa.

Update on Food Allergy testing

Awhile back I wrote about having food allergies, inparticular nuts, seeds, chocolate, and a couple other things.  I do know chocolate causes problems, which includes a severe migraine.  He said I didn't have to do the skin test for it and I readily said ok.  I am not taking even the slightest chance of developing any form of a headache like the kind I get with chocolate. Anyway, I was recently tested for tree nuts...

How to thank someone for this:

I just got a box of See's Candy in the mail from someone, and want to thank them ... I want them to know I appreciate it, but at the same time tell them (remind them) that I cant eat chocolate.  I wouldn't make a big deal over it but I know she spent a good amount of money on this box of chocolates and she doesn't have a lot of money to begin with....

Endometrial Biopsy

I have to have an endometrial biopsy done April 9 (it would have been sooner but based on things happening, she calculated this would be around the best time to have it done).  OB/GYN needs to check for abnormalities, including cancer.  When she said "cancer" all I could think of was another problem?  I am having symptoms though that have added up over time that suggest that there might be something wrong. I've had many...

Popping a blister

On today's show 3/22/13 (Friday), popping a blister was brought up.  It was suggested to (after sterilizing everything) pop the blister, kind of "help" the clear liquid out by putting light pressure on either side of the blister. I have had my share of blisters in my life on/under/in between my toes, on my heal ... I have tried the popping method mentioned on today's show.  However, when I do that and all the fluid...

Hair Loss

I know I've asked this before somewhere, but I really need some answers that maybe I didn't get in the last post about this. My hair is really thinning, most likely from a few medications I am on.  Although those won't change, I am hoping for gaining hair back again despite continuing to take them. One of my DRs recommended Rogaine (again), but I still refuse to use chemicals in my hair, no matter what!...

Wow ... LOL moment

My parents and I were driving back home from shopping.  My father and I were sitting on the driver's side, and my mother on the passenger's side. We were stopped at a light, and had the windows open about 6 inches because it was a nice day outside.  Well wouldn't you know, as we were sitting there, as the light changed to green ... A large SUV drives by rather quickly and hits a puddle,...

Anyone Have this Problem with the DRs site?

I wasn't able to watch the DRs show for a couple days, so I went to the EPISODES link above, then "Today's Show," and clicked on one of the clips I wanted to see.  For the second time (happened last week also), when the clip plays, it plays so slow and in "staccato" form, where it freezes for a second on each screen/syllable before going on to the next one. Hard to explain except to...

Ovarian Cancer

Was wondering if anyone has experience with having ovarian CA, or knows someone who has had to deal with it. If so, were there any tell-tale symptoms/signs that were not vague, and couldn't be mistaken for something else, that a DR would pick up on and not wait around to check for the CA? I have a history of ovarian CA in my family, and some of the times it was caught too late, where...

Today's Show 2/25/13

I just wanted to say I liked today's show a lot.  I was only able to watch the first 1/2 hour, but as I did it really kept my attention and interest.  Joey is awesome, and seems like a great big brother to his sisters! Just wanted to put this out there. Melissa.

Gastritis

I recently had an endoscopy done with some biopsies of my stomach.  The biopsies came back, comfirming that I have gastritis.  I am losing a little blood in my stomach, which is most likely the reason for the chronic iron deficiency.  On Lansoprazole and prescription iron pills for all of that. I am very careful with taking OTC pain killers.  DR said I could continue the ibuprofen though, just not a lot.  Are there any...
