Mosquito repellent

There are lots of mosquitoes here this year swarming around, and I like my early AM walks when they are out the most.  Well, someone gave me a tip on how to keep them away, and I tried it.  It was to use Bounce fabric softeners on yourself.  I rubbed a fabric softener all over my head, hands, arms, etc (open places on me), then carried an extra in my pocket.  And it worked.  I thought the first day that maybe it was coincidence, but I have been doing this for a week or so now and have had only one bad mosquito bite.  And it's not much more expensive than the bug spray.  I may use bug spray as a back-up some days, though not as much as last year.

If anyone tries it, let me know how it works!

Melissa.

Melissa- I had heard that suggestion in the past, but never actually tried it myself!  Thanks for refreshing my memory; I'm going to try it the next time that I sit outside, and then I'll let you know if it worked well or not!  ;-)

When I have people over and we want to sit outside at the patio table I will put a few sheets out on the table and it seems to keep them away as well. Avon's  lotion, Skin So Soft, works great for a repellent for children too. Better than all the toxins that repellent has.

I've used fabric softener sheets for cleaning mini-blinds and the wooden "grates" in my laundry room door (don't exactly know the correct terminology!)  I had heard of this tip a while ago, and it works.  Keeps the dust off longer, or so it seems.

Haven't tried it as a bug repellant though.  I would imagine, get the fragrance free ones.  Also, I'm with plamd, get "natural" repellant whenever possible.  Check out health food stores.

The only problem with SSS by Avon is that it is very greasy, and very perfumed (strong scent)!  I was an Avon Rep. for many years, and even I could only tolerate it in small doses!  Just my opinion!

I also heard putting listerine mixed with water in a spray bottle and spray arouned the area you are sitting at. etc I have not tried it myself so i do not know if it works. Listerine ( mouth wash )

GreenFish- I just recently tried using fabric softener sheets to clean my wooden blinds, and they do work VERY WELL; I was pleasantly surprised!  The dust comes off easily, and using them does seem to keep the dust off longer- a big plus!  For those who want to try it, be sure to use the fabric softener sheet AFTER it has been used in your dryer with a load of clothes!  The heat from the dryer softens the sheet, so it is more pliable when using it for dusting (I imagine that is why/how it picks up the dust so well; when it is softened, it acts more like a magnet to attract the dust to it!).

Yes, the listerine works. I have tried it. I don't know why. I don't know if it would work on a grassy area but I spray it around my deck and it is fairly effective.

Plamd, Glad to hear the listerine works. Will have to go out and get a bottle of it.
