Can't sleep? Eat cherries!

I've read many places how cherries have melatonin in them, which can help with sleep.  My sleeping schedule isn't' the best, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

First time I ate 1 pound (LOL) of cherries, and boy did it work ... I slept like i never had before.  And this could not have been any coincidence either because I made sure there were no other variables.  So I figured why not double check what I found, so I waited a few days, then tried a bunch of them again, and my sleeping impoved.

Maybe others who cant sleep can try this, rather than take a pill.  It is cherry season now too, so they aren't hard to find in stores.

I'm not an expert or anything, but it is interesting experimenting with certain foods and their effects on the body.  Please post if you have ever tried this or plan on it!

M- Does it matter which type of cherry: bing, maraschino, etc.?  Just curious!  Also, does that quantity (1 pound) cause any gastric problems?

Hi Lucy .... I ate the BING cherries.  That amount of cherries didn't cause any gastric problems for me ... I have IBS so it is hard to tell what "helps" and what doesn't, but I think in others it might ... it is a fruit so I'm guessing it *might* cause a laxative effect.

Yes, you are right on it.  I have a book name called "The Top 100 Healing Foods" and it says what you've said in 1st paragraph.  It also says that cherry is "sleep enhancer" and melattonin is import for immune system and has anti-inflammatory activity and can strengthen blood vessels and slow down the aging process of the skin.

One of the surprising thing that I've found is that cherry can prevent many kinds of pain in the fibrous tissues of the body such as the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  I'm going to try it since I have cherries in the refrigerator.

Melissa, when cherries go out of season, try to look for tart cherry juice (a book I was reading said this in regards to reducing pain), which may be on store shelves year round.  You'll have to do more research to see if tart cherry juice works for sleep.  I'm just assuming it will because it's cherry juice, why wouldn't it work the same?

Yohan, I just read about cherries and pain/inflammation reduction...the book I read said that it's because cherries have an antioxidant called anthocyanins (just going off my memory for that spelling!) which reduce inflammation in the body.

I have pain in my neck and back and I also have trouble sleeping occasionally, nothing severe...I'm going to stock up on cherries and see what happens!

I think I will try the tart cherry juice after the season is over if I can find it on the shelves.  I still have some cherries left but need to get more regular cherries at the store soon.  Definitely try the cherries to see if it will help GreenFish ... it can't hurt!

One thing I forgot to mention about cherries: It warms the body up therefore it is not good too much at once for those who has high body temperature, sore throat, irregular bowel, and high blood pressure.

I found cherry juice at the store .... it is new and is from Ocean Spray.  I couldn't find any other cherry juices on the shelves.

PS ... I just looked and it said "Cherry Juice Cocktail", and has a little of 2 other juices in it too.  I didn't see pure cherry juice on the shelves though.

Yeah, you want to look for something close to, or, 100% cherry juice.  Maybe it's something you have to find online, if you're okay with ordering stuff online.  My husband can find anything and everything online, sometimes better things than what's offered in stores, and it's delivered right to our front door!

I will try this :)

If cherry doesn't work, try regular cup of warm (not hot) milk.(regular).  It will help.

The cherries have been helping me fall asleep fast at night.  I'll eat them as a snack during midday, about 20 of them, which is only about 70 or so calories.  (My calorie counter book says 8 cherries is 30 calories.)

Also, I eat them alone (sometimes with just a few mixed nuts), as I've found that with my "weak" stomach over the years, I have a hard time eating fruit AFTER meals--I get a stomach ache.  What I've recently read is the cause of my stomach aches is that the fruit ends up getting "stuck" behind all the slower digested foods and sits there and ferments, when normally, fruit moves very fast through the digestive tract and is not supposed to sit in your stomach and ferment, hence my tummyache!  If you get stomachaches when eating fruit as dessert after meals, this could be why.  Eat most fruits as a snack by themselves...or if you happen to eat a light meal of veggies only, fruit afterwards should be fine.  It's the bread, rice, meat, beans, etc, that slows down digestion and "traps" the fruit behind it.

Melissa- I just saw Old Orchard Very Cherre juice pictured in a grocery store ad (it looks as if it comes in Cherry flavor, as well as Cranberry, and Pomegranate).  I haven't researched it any further yet, so not sure if this might be something to consider, but just thought that I would share the info.!
