More Fiber, More Water to Prevent Constipation?

Today on the show 7/17/12 (Tues) the colorectal surgeon mentioned more water and fiber to prevent constipation.  While this has shown to be true, IMO there are exceptions ... I'll use myself as an example:  I have IBS, and the more fiber I have the more constipated I get.  I've tried it.  It constipates me so bad that I need to take some laxatives after.  The fiber seems to make my colon slow down.

The worst foods that I can have are the high fiber ones.  I can have one high fiber food at a time, but only occaisionally.  This is with adequate water intake during the day also.

Any one else have the same problem?

Melissa.

Years ago, I used to have problems with too much fiber when it came to breads.  I was eating A LOT of bread.  And high fiber cereal like Kashi Go Lean.  I would eat the bread and cereal all in the same day.  That's a lot of fiber.  Maybe I wasn't drinking enough water with it...it caused a lot of stomach pain, severe stomach pain, and IBS symptoms.  But it was also the gluten.  I realized I had gluten-intolerance.  Cutting out breads and wheat cereal helped me tremendously.  All my symptoms went away.

Now, years later, my diet is mostly full of fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, and beans.  That's A LOT of fiber.  BUT this time, my body is fine with it.  Not sure if it's because I'm getting a good mix of soluble and insoluble fiber.  Maybe you can look into seeing if a certain fiber is better than another.  I'm not sure.  All I know is that the fiber foods I'm getting now all contain water, plus I'm drinking lots of water too.  Back when I was eating all that bread and cereal (very dry foods that suck up water), I don't think I was as conscious as I am now about water.

I would guess that I'm getting 20-35 grams of fiber a day, depending on what I eat for the day.  It also helped me to work up to this higher amount slooowly.  And cutting out breads and cereals has been the best thing ever for my health!  I get enough carbs from brown rice, beans, veggies, fruits.

I think I'm going to try and limit breads and cereals.  Realistically I can't stop breads (more like whole wheat crackers with peanut butter), but to allow them on occaision.  I do eat a gluten-free cereal though (Cinnamon Chex) so that one I don't worry about.  I don't eat a lot of bread, but I do like Joseph's Flax Oat Bran & Whole Wheat pita bread, with reduced carbs (8 per whole pita bread).  My water intake is pretty good, but i guess that can always be helped at times.

Although there is a lot of sugar in dried fruits, I do eat some dates. I once ate a lot of prunes and dried apricots (I think you know I can eat large amounts of things at one time LOL!) and my intestines seemed to really slow down and I learned my lesson!   Worst kind of food I can eat is dried fruit (except minimal dates at times).  That is one thing high in fiber I can't tolerate and have to avoid, more than bread.

I'm glad you found a way to get fiber in and not have a problem.  For me that would be a big accomplishment!

Based on your previous blog...I'm able to eat a lot of cherries at one sitting too, without any complications :)

The only dried fruit I eat are dates in the form of Larabars--fruit and nut bars, no added sugar, no strange ingredients.  They contain "1/2 serving of fruit" in each bar, in the form of dates.  Try if they are available in your area.  Some are better than others.  I like Lemon Bars, Coconut Cream Pie, Chocolate Coconut Chew, Banana Bread, Ginger Snap.

Good luck on your fiber quest!

I'll look for them in the grocery store ... thanks!

Correction:  "1/4 serving of fruit" in every bar.
