Infected Toe

Well, I have been having a problem with blisters on my feet after I go for a walk.  I saw the podiatrist who said to get wicked (pronounced "wikkt") socks to let my feet air out more as I walk.

I got them and they worked.  Until a few days ago.  I came home one AM from a walk and had a blister under the toenail.  Not happy and it was very painful/throbbing.  I put bacitracin around the nail, covered it up, aired it out, etc.  But the morning after (I didn't go walking after I got the blister) I go the blister, the skin was pink around the nail, so I continued with the bacitracin.  Soon after I noticed it, it had become red around the whole top of the toe, but I was still letting it go with the bacitracin.

However, soon after there was a red streak below the nail.  This all happened within 2 days. Last night it got very painful and the throbbing got worse, so I emailed my DR to see if he knew of anything to help and he prescribed an antibiotic (not sure which one yet, need to pick it up), with an appt for the end of next week.  So I am hoping this works!

I picked up Keflex from the pharmacy.  I'm "hoping" it gets worse before it gets better because that is what it is doing.  Hurts to bend it, redder, slightly puffier, and VERY sore to the slightest touch.  I'm not even aggravating it by walking like I usually do.

Any suggestions to help the pain/swelling are welcome.  Thanks.

Finally, the 3rd day of antibiotics, the pain and swelling seem to have some to a halt.  Crossing fingers it only gets better from here.

Sucks that you can't go for a walk...unless you are better right now and can walk as of today.

I can only suggest consuming anti-inflammatory foods, staying away from inflammatory foods, and eating/taking probiotics after the antibiotics (not sure about eating/taking probiotics during antibiotic treatment because I'm currently reading a book that says to take them for a while after treatment, but I think you can take probiotics during..."Super Immunity" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman...great book!).

Does a cold compress help?

What about your shoe size?  Could your shoes be 1/2 size too small?  Just wondering...

Hi ... no, still can't go for a walk.  I may try tomorrow though.  Today it is better but still clearly is not gone.

I am eating a lot of yogurt, and do have probiotics here that I am taking (leftover from the 17 DD!) ... I also read that Keflex messes up the intestinal flora.  So far I haven't had any intestinal problems.  No, cold compresses don't seem to help.  DR emailed back and said to soak it in warm water, warm compresses (not doing that, seems to not help) keep bandage dry, take nsaids if necessary, prop up foot, and a few other things.  I see DR Thursday, and if necessary have a follow-up appt beginning of September with the podiatrist.

Shoe size is OK.  That issue was resolved when I saw the podiatrist.  Also wear the wicked ("wikkt") socks.  After the podiatrist , I was able to walk without any problems, for about a week.  Then the infection started with a blister under the toenail and then progressed from there.

Hey, thanks for answering my questions...good to hear you are "balancing" your intestinal flora...I thought cold compresses could help, but warm I guess makes sense too, it's a more soothing temp, but too bad it doesn't seem to be helping you anyway...your shoe size seems to be good now, the wikkt socks are helping...well, hope this heals quick and you have no more issues in the future after this dreadful infection!!!  Good luck with walking soon.

Thanks ... the nail came off and there is no nail bed now.  Not sure what it means.  Infection is getting better though.  I went for a walk today that ended up being the best walk so far this summer!  No pain at all.  I hope it continues this way!

Wow, that's great.  The nail was probably causing the pain, and maybe caused the infection.  Now that it's off, a new and improved nail can eventually grow back, just ask your dr how to best care for it as it grows back in...

Your nail came off? it means new nail will grow back.  Don't worry, it won't be painful at all.  Don't forget to treat that infected area.  I remember that clearly (my fingernail back in 2006).

Update: I am doing ok now, don't seem to have any residual effects from the Keflex.  Everything is healing nicely.  Ironically the SAME thing has happened to the other foot same toe, but I drained the blister-like thing (watery blood) and put antiseptic and bacitracin on it. I don't want that one infected too.
