Migraines

Hi ... I know there are a lot of people on the board who have mentioned they get migraines.  The other day I had a left-sided one, and aside from the excrutiating pain, my left eye and mouth drooped.  When the pain lessened I could finally open my eye the whole way and my mouth was soon to follow and I could smile normal.  It was not a drastic drooping on my mouth, but it worried me enough I am seeing the doctor today.  Sometimes, though, people who have been through their own personal experience with things are the best judge of all, and can give valuable information on what helped them.

Is it normal for an eye to droop as well as 1/2 the mouth during a migraine?  Also, any suggestions  on how to get rid of them, whether a particular med that helps to home remedies.  All information will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Melissa.

Melissa,

My name is Anna.  You can find me as hillbilliette14 here.  I have had migraines for 25+years.  Many time during an attack I have experienced the same thing.  My Dr. at the time told me that the drooping was from the pressure on the nerve and when the pain was gone the drooping disappeared.

I did not know that anyoneelse had those types of symptoms.

What type of treatment are you using for the migraines.  I have been on over 200 medication and nothing short of extreme painmeds have helped me.  I'd like to hear more from you.

I am hoping all you had was a migraine!!!!!!!!!!!  But from the sounds of that, it sounded more like a stroke.

PLEASE let us know what the doctor says!!!!  I am sending you my prayers and well wishes.

God bless!

Anna,

I'm glad to know that someone else had the drooping eye and side of mouth.  I really don''t get migraines, but  I had some serious pain the other day and said if this is a migraine how in the world do people tolerate it (frequent sufferers).  The doctor gave me Zomig to try, but only a one time deal because of the surgery next week and didn't want to add any meds right now that might not mix and match.  I'm sorry you have haad migraines for so long.  I don't know how you cope---what do you do for them?

Hi Lisa,

I just got back from the doctor and he didn't mention stroke.  He gave me Zomig to try on a one time basis.  I have to be careful though because I also have HTN and seizure disorder, so I plan on taking one and hoping it makes me tired to fall asleep without side effects.  Thank you for you wishes and prayers.  They mean a lot.

I have had the headaches for so long I don't know how it feels to be pain free.  The Dr.'s have hade me on so many meds over the years that I can't even begin to name them all.

The triptan family like Zomig and the like only make my migraine WORSE.  Plus I have a family history of heart disease so I'm not suppose to take them.

My family Dr. uses DHE and pain control in the hospital every 4 to 6 months.  That helps keep the big attacks at bay.

And sadly my oldest daughter has inherited them from me.  BUMMER.

I hope that the Zomig works for you.  What kind of surgery are you having?  Nothing too serious I hope.  My husband and I will be praying for you and your family.

Hope to hear from you again.

Re: Zomig-----that the Dr. gave me for my head pain-----I will never take it again in my life--side effects suck, you dont fall asleep, rather you get bloodshot eyes and feel out of it unable to sleep.  It relaxes extremeties it seems only, so your torso is like what the hell; makes you muscles tighten/relax---I can;t even explain that one; you'd need to experience it.  And in the end the head pain comes back.  There is more but I think you got the picture.  My recommendation is to NOT take  or try this one.

Anna,

Ditto on the Zomig--I am in hell right now with these side effects.  It makes everything hurt in your body.

Hi Yvonne,

I got canker sores and my lips dried up.  That was the closest thing to a cold sore i got.

Melissaw, when I get the numbness on my right side, it starts off as tingling then goes numb from the centre of my skull down, then I completely lose the use of that side of my body to the point of having to pick up my right hand with my left hand in order to move it and not being able to stand on my right leg. But there is no drooping of my mouth or eye. But when this is happening to me I have NO pain at all.  This can last anywhere from an hour to a few hours. When I start to feel a tingling sensation in my fingers, toes, face and neck, I know the feeling is starting to return and that the pain will hit like a frieght train within minutes. I have to be prepared for that, either in the hospital or have something on hand to deal with it. It hits fast and the pain is extreme like being slammed into by something moving at a high rate of speed. Then my right eye droops and actually closes to keep out the light.

This happend once years back in a small community and I went to the hospital, the young doctor on call wasn't sure what to do with me so he called the neurologist he trained under in Vancouver Hospital. He told him he was familiar with it but had only seen it once and explained that the pain level was so high that my brain was causing the numbing out on my right side because it couldn't handle it and that when the levels came down the feeling would start to come back and then the pain would hit fast and furious so he should have a certain dose of some drug ready to inject in an IV right away. As soon as I felt the tingling I buzzed them by the time they got in there with the injection I was curled up in a fetal position crying {would have been screaming but that would have hurt}. I don't know what they gave me but within a short time I was out like a light. They kept me there over night. Now I take the "demon" pill to hasten the numbness part and get it started at home then have to take another one to kill the pain. 2 of those in a day are horrible, don't sleep for about 20 hours, but they work. I hate them. That doesn't happen every time, but just did with this last cycle I had. I am doing better now then before though.

I have the same thing...when I have a headache my eye on the right side will start to close and my mouth will droop. As the headache get worse so does the drooping and the eye will become completely closed. My Neurologist says what I have is called Chronic Daily Headache Syndrome with Migraines. But he is not sure as to why the drooping and the eye closes. I am on, it seems, a ton of medication but nothing seems to work as of yet.  He continues to try different medications in hope of finding the right combination to give me some relief of the pain that I have every day.  I am not sure if it is because of the amount of family history with Migraines and Seizures has anything to do with it. But I would tell your doctor about it and yes there are others out here that deal with it too, at least I do. If you find anything that stop the drooping, let me know because I know it does look like you have had a stroke.  Sometimes when I go to the store a headache will start and now the drooping and eye closing starts...now people are looking at me because yes, I look like I had a stroke.  Most of the time I don't go anywhere alone either because I have these headaches daily so that someone can drive.  I can only seem to drive short distances because driving for some reason causes me to get headaches. I wear sunglasses all the time too. So, if you do find anything that helps, please let me know. Thanks
