After today's show on how to be healthy and save money, I sat down to think about how food has caused our family a lot of stress!!!
With a son who has autism and food texture issues, a very picky husband who is non-compliant with diabetes diet outlines, a personal issue of gastroparesis (a type of stomach paralysis), we are always at war about what to eat.
Not for lack of trying, I must add!!! A meeting with a medical nutritionist ended up with her telling me that she would throw up her hands if she had to deal with my schedule, my husband's food preferences, and the needs of my son, not to mention trying to do it healthfully. I left her office with another unrealistic list and good luck wishes. Good luck is right!!!
I have tried to sit down and plan a weeks worth of healthy menus and shop accordingly, using coupons and weekly specials, taking into account the above personal preferences, only to have my efforts destroyed because our life is not one that has a consistent schedule, planned time for meals, or energy to do it all!
I believe we are like most families who have crazy schedules and hectic work weeks that exhaust them to the point of using the drive thru at the fast food restaurant as an easy way to meet the "wants' of the individual members without turning their own kitchens into a cafeteria.
I guess the only way for the "Food Wars" at my house to end is for me to make the meals and let the chips fall where they will. I know there will be days when my husband comes home, turns up his nose, and calls to order a pizza. I know there will be days when my son will be grimacing the whole time he is chewing the broccoli that did not come in take-out chicken broccoli stir fry. I know I will be eating things that I would rather not but have to set the example and take some action so we can all be healthier.
I know this is going to cause more Food Wars at my house but in order for us to save money and lose weight, I am going to have to do this myself. Wish me more good luck!!!
