Causes of blood clots not determined

Some doctors may not make the effort to determine why a patient develops blood clots. Instead they prescribe Coumadin (Warfarin) to be taken for the rest of their life. Would there be harm to the body to use Coumadin for 20 years or more? If the patient has been taking Coumadin for over two years now, it is possible to figure out what caused the blood clots in the first place or is it too late?

I do feel more teaching prevention of blood clots in prolonged traveling. I think of the journalist that didn't drink enough fluids went to Iraq and was in confined space, and died from a PE. I am a nurse and we had a patient that drove to Myrtle Beach without getting out of the car (several hours) and he developed a DVT. I think we need to instruct people on the need to move our legs/ do leg pumps with our feet to help circulation when on log trips, either in car or airplane trips. It could save lives!

Blood clots has my doctor's all in a tizzy. You see it seems I inhereted mine from my parents. My Mother always said she had "bad blood" now that was just about all they knew about it back in the early 1900's. So when my doctor suppected something he had a DNA done on me. When I went to hear the results he told me my Mom did in fact have "bad blood" but the real problem was----so did my Dad! Wow, could have knocked me over with a feather. I cannot take blood thinners because of other health problems so in a 4 month time peroid I was in the hospital getting 6 pints of blood because internal bleeding (caused by my Scleroderma) 2 times. Now that is a total of 12 pints of blood. I joke with the doctor telling him I don't think I have any of my own blood anymore. I have to laugh or die of dehygration from crying so much.Oh well, I was not promisted a rose garden, but then even a rose garden has thorns.----------ladywithattitude
