Mole removal

When do you have to have a mole looked at or removed? I had a few moles looked at when I was in my teens and was told everything was fine. Since then they have not changed in size but one has changed a bit color wise where it has a clear cover but is blackish underneath. Should I have these relooked at by a dermatologist or how often should they be checked?
