Food Safety

With all of the issues that come from finding chemicals like Melamine or plastic in food made in China, to Listeria, mad cow, salmonella etc. What are the effects on your body from ingesting thngs that shouldn't be in food like Melamine? There have been so many instances of late that the FDA has stopped talking about it in the news but this should be a huge concern for everyone. How can a person know where there food is really coming from? Why isn't there any standards for food coming from other countries, like a sanitary environment where it is processed?
