Gynecomastia

It’s always amazing to look through letters, e-mails, comments on ProduceTheDoctors.com and Facebook submissions from viewers. One particular topic that caught my attention was gynecomastia, or excess male breast tissue, submitted by CGlass00. We have discussed breast implants and reductions for women but never tackled the subject matter when it comes to men.

I was surprised to learn that up to 60 percent of pubertal boys have some degree of gynecomastia, and while in the majority of cases it diminishes away, roughly 30 percent of adolescent boys are left with some degree of the condition. Further research also revealed that with men who suffer from gynecomastia , no amount of diet or exercise can reduce the excess tissue. This information left me wondering: what treatment options are available?

A 15-year-old old boy, who suffers from gynecomastia, and his mom have the same question. We reached out to a doctor, who is an expert on the condition, and learned that there is indeed a solution!

Tune-in Monday to see the amazing procedure and results!

Drug Abuse Among Teens

After reading through submissions on ProduceTheDoctors.com, we decided it was important to do another show about drug use.  Many community members, including Toycave4 and Ssharma, wrote in expressing their concerns about drug abuse amongst teens.

We are devoting an entire show to discussing the latest drugs teens are using, and will show you what you should look out for if you are concerned about someone you know. We were shocked when we discovered that some of these drugs are actually being sold legally, known as K2 and “Meow Meow.” We will also hear real life stories from teens addicted to drugs, and those who have gone through rehab and overcome their addiction.

Be sure to watch this emotional episode to find out what you need to know to ensure that your children, family members and friends don’t head down the devastating path of addiction.

Nail Biting

We’re producing an upcoming show about the kinds of biological things that people find unattractive, even objectionable, about themselves – some things they can help, some they can’t.

One topic that caught our attention is nail biting, submitted by community member Connie Rogers. She has struggled with the habit for years, and it prompted us to discuss some solutions to the problem. Many other viewers, including meljohnnat, wrote in describing their sometimes life-long battles with this hard-to-kick habit, comparing it to smoking and a tobacco addiction.

We want to give both our in-studio guest and all the viewers who struggle with nail biting some real solutions that have worked for former “addicts”!

Check out the episode on Thursday to learn about tricks and treatments to help stop nail biting.

Autism

April is Autism Awareness Month. Type the word autism into the search on ProduceTheDoctors.com and you’ll find pages and pages of entries, like from rukky, ranabashour, danielsmom and amanda_c_jordan. It’s not surprising, because about 1 in every 100 children is diagnosed with autism. The statistics range from 1 in 91 children to 1 in 110 children, but if you’re a parent, hearing the words, “Your child has autism spectrum disorder,” it’s one too many!

I combed through several books, countless articles, and probably single-handedly destroyed a forest with the four-inch thick binder of research my team compiled for this show. As a producer, it was a daunting task. As a mother, I couldn’t help but think, what if I had to decipher this while dealing with the recognition that something’s not right with my baby, and all of those emotions? It would feel completely overwhelming.

So I set out to create a show that gives you the tools and information you need to stand in the face of any diagnosis with confidence. By the end of the hour, you will know more and feel less afraid. We will cover it all — from breaking the news to family and friends, to finding treatments that really work to figuring out ways to pay for therapy. Find out the six warning signs every parent needs to know to catch autism early! Learn how early intervention can help change your child's IQ. Discover if a brain scan can detect autism! Watch how a simple phone application can help your non-verbal child communicate! Through it all, you’ll hear stories of honesty and hope from the parents who’ve been there, including actress Holly Robinson Peete and retired NFL quarterback Rodney Peete.

If, by chance, you’re one of the few people who doesn’t know someone dealing with autism, trust me, you’ll benefit from this hour, too. Award-winning attorney and author Areva Martin shares principles from her book The Everyday Advocate that will help you understand your rights as a patient, get a second opinion when you need one and stand up for your health!

I could have easily produced a mini-series … but for now, we’ve limited ourselves to one episode. Tell your friends and tune-in Friday, April 23 for this important hour. Be sure to visit www.thedoctorstv.com then click on the show page for a thorough list of additional resources.

When the Peetes recount the heartbreaking day their son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism, they call it “The Never Day,” because their doctor rattled off a list of “He’ll never …” statements that seemed to never end. What they’ve learned in the nine years since that day is how to break free from the “never”… I hope you will, too.

We love getting questions about bad breath, like from selectress101! It's such an interesting topic, because it's something we all deal with every day.

I was surprised to learn from Dr. Dorfman that for people with a certain kind of halitosis, there is a cure! My family and friends keep asking me if it's a good option for them. I just tell them, and you, to tune-in on Monday to find out!
