Varicose Veins Idea is Headed for Production

Posted by AndrewScher to Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, Sep 30, 2009 4:02pm

Hello Doctors community!

We’d like to give a huge thank you to Debbie in Wichita for submitting her Varicose Veins show idea. Debbie wanted us to address the best way to treat varicose veins. So, Debbie, we heard you, and guess what? We searched high and low and found a vein specialist who has been performing a cutting-edge procedure that reduces the appearance of those unsightly varicose veins. We’re taping the story this week, so check thedoctorstv.com line-up in early October to see when it will air and watch your idea come to life on The Doctors!

Keep submitting your ideas! They’re great, we’re listening and stay tuned for more ideas in production.

I also have unsightly veins in my legs and the pain is getting worse. I can wear long pants but the pain constantly reminds me the are there. They throb at night while trying to sleep and feel heavy and ache after only short periods of standing or walking. I have tried everything I know of to rid myself. I have spent thousands of dollars on useless remedies and saline injections and Jobst hose. Is there something that I can do that actually works?

If patients have questions regarding varicose veins or other venous disorders, you may refer them to www.phlebology.org. The American College of Phlebology (ACP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing vein care. Phlebology is a newly recognized board specialty of the AMA and pertains to the treatment of venous disease. The ACP has a website and other venues to answer patient and medical professional questions.

Dear Mr. Scher, WIll you please be so kind to provide the public, who overwhelmingly voted for childhood cancer, an explanation as to why you chose to ignore the voting results in favor of vericose veins? Are you going to tackle childhood cancer at a later date? Are you going to ignore this huge problem claiming more and more of our children each year because it is scary? Please, please tell us why your show and others like it refuse to help put a face on this threat to our very future. Yes, it is raw and uncomfortable to talk about, let me assure you, those of us who have been touched by it know. Childhood cancer is the most devastating thing that can happen to a child, their parents, marriages, siblings, friends, on and on. It deserves to be talked about. Please don't be afraid! This is real and I hope you and your show find the courage to put it out there.

Hey Andy, I hope you also noticed how many people posted about scars. They might have different heading but say the same thing inside. You have no idea how scars on ones face or any other part of the body that's shown can affect someones life. Seeing them every day can really put someones self esteem to a new low. No matter if their from acne, cosmetic procedures, pregancy or self damage they put a toll on ones health mentally. Can't talk to people thinking all their doing is looking at the marks and always feeling ugly. Help Andy.

Andrew Scher, I thought the idea was to submit ideas and vote and the most votes would have the topic moved to production. Another disappoint for the kids and their families. Childhood cancer is an American Tragedy and you are part of that tragedy Mr. Scher. With deep disappointment Debbie Simpson Seth's mom

I am looking forward to seeing the show on varicose veins. I do hope it also covers spider veins. I had treatment some yrs. ago for spider veins, but for whatever reason, a small spider vein got worse after the injections in one area. Also I have some permanent blue circles where I was injected. Would like to know why this happened and how can I get them to go away? Please be sure to ask the vein specialist. Thank you!

Vericose veins ... are you kidding me? That condition is more cosmetic than life-threatening. What about CHILDHOOD CANCER?? The fact that I personally know seven kids under the age of 18 with cancer is alarming. The pain and suffering that they endure plus the toll it takes on a family is something worth watching, talking and the doing something about it! I hope your reasoning is that you are saving this subject as a special in-depth look at childhood cancer. It is a problem. A HUGE one and it needs to be brought out in the spot light as soon as possible. Don't wait until it hits someone you know.

While there are many topics that could/should be covered (perhaps even varicose veins) - it seems there should be time and focus put on more important, even life threatening topics, such as childhood cancer. It would be a sad show indeed, but it could also be a show focusing on the best ways to handle coping with cancer in your family, dealing with the emotional devastation, especially if your child does not survive. There are many people who have varicose veins who go on throughout their day happily, while there are too many people who go throughout their day broken hearted because of the loss of a child. Let's talk about how to deal with this overwhelming loss. Let's focus on helping make aware Childhood Cancer month. You would be doing a great service. Looks like under "Show Topics" there is a great interest in "Disease/Illness". Please help.

I really hope at some point you would do a show on childhood cancer. Cancer in itself is devastating to all who are affected. But when a child gets cancer, it becomes much more than a disease. What happens to the child's family? What happens to the child's friends? This is not something you can say is part of being a parent or a part of growing up. Many people's idea of what it's like to have cancer is that the person goes away, gets treated, and comes back. How hard can that be? That's what I thought. What a child who has cancer has to to go through is awful and everyone should know what the effects of cancers are and what it means to go through treatment. And God forbid that the child does not make it; some of us have seen that. You could do so much good to educate all of us about this awful thing.

REALLY!!!!!!!!!! VARICOSE VEINS!!!!!! Childhood Cancer has been the number 1 idea since you started this!!!! As a mother who has lost a child to this awful disease I feel like I have been slapped in the face!!! Did you even realize that September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month? Do you REALLY listen to your veiwers?? This is an outrage!! VARICOSE VEINS....UNBEILEVABLE!!!! I am just sick thinking that you find that to be more important than kids!! Maybe you are just like evryone else, hide and it will go away, don't talk about it, pretend it isn't as bad as it really is....I sure wish I could but I can't!! I live with it everyday, reminded how my son died and will not graduate High School this year, won't be there for his little sister, isn't around to greet me in the morning, after school or anyother time EVER!!! This was a great chance to do the right thing, get the info out there, hear our stories and help these little warriors but you failed!!! ^^Tyler's^^ Outraged Mom

What happens to ideas that have been posted weeks ago and therefore are not as likely to be read anymore?

Hi, This is Debbie in Wichita. Just wanted to comment on the show ideas. The idea I submitted was easy to cover and would be the fastest to get on the air (low hanging fruit is always easier to get). They are probably checking into what they can cover on childhood cancer. I too agree that childhood cancer is an important subject and I voted for those ideas myself. Give them a chance to do the research they need to do so they can make sure they cover the subject the best they can. I believe they will do a show covering childhood cancer, but will need to spend quite a bit of time preparing for that show so they can give it the attention it deserves. Don't give up on your ideas, I have seen several good suggestions.

I'm a little surprised also that they are doing a show about varicose veins, I'm sure it is important to the people who are suffering from them, but what about the diseases like my Mom has devics that so many people including doctors never heard about are suffering from, it can be life threatening, it devastates your life, and I can't tell you how frustrating it is as her daughter to explain to doctors what she has, it can be scary that most medical community do not know what it is, or how to treat her, also so many are misdiagnosed and don't get the proper treatment which can be life threatening. Please bringing awareness to this may someday bring a cure, we need your help.
