I feel that "The Doctors" is the prefect place to inform the public of new CDC & JACHO Breastfeeding guidelines coming in April of 2010. Also the fact that WIC is decreasing the amount of formula they will be providing a family each month.
Each state has Breastfeeding Coalitions to help promote & educate about breastfeeding. I had never heard of them until I was asked to be apart of one in my county. Governor Daniels has mandated that each county in Indiana have a BFcoalition. He has made BF part of his "In Shape" program.
I have had a passion about BF for 32yrs. Until now the only help I knew of was LaLeche League. Not to mention the law stating that work places have to provide a BF Mom who returns to work, a BF area for her to pump milk.
I work for a group of 5 OB Dr's. They do not mention BF until the post-partum visit. I now have our computer people building a form into our OB program so it will prompt the BF question during an OB visit. They also had no idea what a CLC (Certified lactation Counselor) or an IBCLC (International Breastfeeding Certified Latation Consultant) was. Nor did they care. In my area if a BF Mom calls her Family Dr. for help, she gets refered to her OB Dr. the OB Dr. says they delivered & they are finished with their job. So the poor Mom is left to her own devises, which usulally ends up with her switching to formula. It is so sad that society has made BF so difficult.
I know that Dr. Lisa has touched on the subject. But I feel strongly that the public needs to know about all the help that there is out there, & that the Government is on board with BF now.
The Doctor's show is on in our waiting area every day. I loved Dr. Lisa's Colpo show. If the public only knew how prevalent dysplasia & HPV is, it would boggle their minds. So now I can only pray that you will provide the same good information about the new CDC guidlines on Breastfeeding & the help that is available.
