I'm a 16 year old male, and today I went to a follow-up appointment with my gastroenterologist. Once again, I'm still losing wait, and down to 94 pounds. Towards the end of the appointment, he wanted to discuss some biopsy results from when I had an endoscopy. The vilae in my small intestine were intact, but there were small areas of microscopic inflammation. The odd thing he noticed was that in my biopsies, I am completely missing two enzymes. The first one most people are familiar with is lactase, which can cause lactose intolerance. The second one is Sucrase and Isomaltase, which is one people are less familiar with because it is much rarer. In this disease, people are lacking the enzymes to digest sucrose and maltose or in common words, table sugar. There is also difficulty in digesting starches because isomaltase is missing or reduced as well. This wouldn't be as bad on its own, but coupled with lactase deficiency, it severly restricts your diet. I now have to learn and remake a completely new diet devoid of almost all sugar and dairy, and limited in starches. Even worse, I am having a fecal Elastace test to see if an enzyme produced by my pancreas is working at all also. If this one isn't working either, then who knows what I would be allowed to eat and I can't afford to lose any more wait at all. I hope you guys can help spread the word about this condition and what can cause all three of them together.
