I think it would be wonderful to produce a show that will help raise awareness of various rare diseases that afflict children. For example, one of the diseases that you could highlight would be EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa). It is a skin disease that affects the skin and causes blistering. The blistering is usually caused by any friction created on the skin. Children who suffer from this disease are referred to as Butterfly children or "butterfly skin" because the skin is as fragile as a butterfly's wing.

My neice has suffered from this disease since she was a baby, fortunately Audra suffers from a simplex form but many children have a more severe form and it afflicts most if not all of their bodies. Once Audra entered school my sister made it her mission to educate the parents, school administration and children about the disease so as not to be afraid of it but to understand it. My sister would be more than willing to share their story and how it relates to disease awareness on your show.

I am sure there are many other illnesses afflicting chidren which you could highlight as well. When Audra was diagnosed I had never heard of this disease and I'm sure there are many others like me. Women are more commonly affected than men, particularly around and after menopause, but younger women or girls may also develop the disease. The condition most commonly occurs on the vulva and around the anus with ivory-white elevations that may be flat and glistening. There may be marked itching or the condition may be without any symptoms. There may also be thinning and shrinkage of the genital area that may make coitus, urination and defecation painful.

In males, the disease may take the form of whitish thickening of the foreskin, which cannot be retracted easily (phimosis). In contrary to women, there is no perianal involvement. In men, this genital involvement has traditionally been known as balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO).

On the non-genital skin, the disease may manifest as porcelain-white spots with small visible plugs inside the orifices of hair follicles or sweat glands on the surface. Thinning of the skin may also occur.

I am a 31 year old happily married mother of 4 liviing what I thought was my american dream. Until unexplainable and some times embarassing things started happening to me, such as my hair falling out in patches not having enough energy to stay awake all day no matter what I did, my hands hurt so bad in the mornings that it became difficult for me to write notes to my childrens teacher. People would tell me that i am jsut being lazy or I am to stressed out. I have since found out that I have Lupus and that is the cause for all of these things. But what was Lupus? What did it mean for me? Nobody knew anything about it not even my own GP knew much. In a matter of a 2 year period I went from a healthy young energetic mother with my whole life ahead of me to now not having the energy most days to even play with my kids. People still tell me that i am just being lazy and that it is not as bad as I am saying because nobody knows anything about this disease which is shocking to me because it affects mostly women in the prime of their lives. I was so shocked that even people in the health care field know so little about this disease. Please help us all understand a little more about this terrible disease. Thank you for listening.

I am now on my second round of steroids and have been on Prednisone since the 7th of December, I am also on Asacol and Azathioprine, folic acid, Micro K, and calcium carbonate. I think it would be great to do a show about the disease, as well things to help you when dealing with a flare-up, common triggers or things to avoid, as well as general info on the disease for general awareness. I have seen several discussions about IBS, but rarely colitis and never Crohn's.
I think this would be a great idea for a show!!!

Talk about some blood disorders that affect red blood cells, from the most common to the very rare. My interest in a show like this is because I have Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). Very few people have heard of DBA. I would love to increase public awareness about it. This could make people aware of the reasons why it is important to be both a blood donor and being registered on the bone marrow donation registry. Thank you for considering this topic.
