After many years of relentless itching I was diagnosis in 2000 with a condition called Lichen sclerosus / Lichen sclerosis. I have this condition on my vulva. It is embarrassing for me to discuss this with family, friends and lovers.
I have found support and most of my knowledge regarding this condition from a yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/LichenSclerosis
To my knowledge this can only be treated with topical steroids or with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) http://www.haifu.com.cn/en_main_3.asp
only available in China today as documented in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics January 2010 and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist November 2004.
Can you please do an episode on this terrible illness that affects men, woman and children?
Women are more commonly affected than men, particularly around and after menopause, but younger women or girls may also develop the disease. The condition most commonly occurs on the vulva and around the anus with ivory-white elevations that may be flat and glistening. There may be marked itching or the condition may be without any symptoms. There may also be thinning and shrinkage of the genital area that may make coitus, urination and defecation painful.
In males, the disease may take the form of whitish thickening of the foreskin, which cannot be retracted easily (phimosis). In contrary to women, there is no perianal involvement. In men, this genital involvement has traditionally been known as balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO).
On the non-genital skin, the disease may manifest as porcelain-white spots with small visible plugs inside the orifices of hair follicles or sweat glands on the surface. Thinning of the skin may also occur.
Thank you
