My company, VITAZEST (diabetes friendly water) in partnership with the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) has teamed up with the Subway restaurant franchise to create and test a first of its kind, “Diabetes Friendlier Menu” at Subway. This revolutionary menu is endorsed by the Diabetes Research Institute whose nutritional experts helped design the “improved” selections found on this new “Diabetes Friendlier Scoop it Menu”.
We have created the website www.subwayscoopit.com as a place to document the success and progress of this six month test. As founders of this concept, my company was charged with the task of demonstrating that this socially responsible undertaking also makes business sense for the Subway organization. In essence, we need to spread the buzz among the diabetic, pre-diabetic and health conscious community and motivate them to show their support for the cause by dining at Subway. Increased store traffic will be a major barometer for measuring success and the maintenance of longevity for this campaign.
It is our corporate vision that one day in the near future, the 80 million diabetics and borderline diabetics have a “safe” place to dine away from home. Subway, with over 23,000 locations nationwide can be that place. Consumers can feel comfortable and order off the “Scoop it” Menu (removing the doughy center of the bread), which helps them eliminate the guesswork in identifying smart and responsible meal choices, when dining away from home.
I believe that once this concept proves successful and is rolled out nationally, many other fast food players would follow suit and begin to cater to this once neglected sector of the population (diabetics). Perhaps this will motivate the very Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) who are (in part) responsible for fueling the obesity and diabetes epidemics can now play a responsible role in reversing it or at the very least, slow it down!
