I have had both bulimia and anorexia since 2003. There is little information (on the broadcast system) that I can see. I am very tired of this controlling my life and am very scared sometimes as to what damage I have don to myself.

Losing Your Hair? Your Genes are Only Partly to Blame,
Says One of World’s Leading Experts on Hair Loss
--Other Culprits Run the Gamut from Menopause to Weight Loss Supplements and Steroids--
BOCA RATON, FLA. – February17, 2010 -- In a study due to be released next month, the world’s leading hair transplant and hair loss expert Dr. Larry Shapiro will show that men and women have been losing their hair from using popular weight loss and work out products that contain whey protein isolate- and it’s not just their genes that are to blame.
Shapiro, who has spent 20 years treating over 11,000 men and women for hair thinning and loss, said, “My clinical practice shows a definite trend among people suffering from hair loss—they’re increasingly battling the effects of thyroid problems, anesthesia, cosmetic surgery, dietary deficiencies, prescription medications, male pattern baldness, use of growth hormone-based supplements during weight training, use of steroids for weight training, and use of weight-loss products and fat burners. Years of clinical practice have shown that these factors play a far greater role than we thought before than just personal genetic characteristics alone and can accelerate hair loss in people who may not see this until later in life.”
Shapiro noted that natural or self-induced hormonal changes are common causes among both women and men experiencing hair loss. “Estrogen levels drop during menopause and after pregnancy, and this can result in hair loss,” said Shapiro. “In addition, men and women who take growth hormones and testosterone for weight training and weight reduction programs frequently come into my office complaining of hair loss. I have to explain to them that the growth hormones they’re taking to strengthen their bodies are actually causing their hair to fall out.”

According to Shapiro, popular nutritional supplements such as Creatine and anabolic steroids can cause hair loss because they quickly increase testosterone levels in the body. Weight-loss products that change the metabolism of the thyroid can also cause people to lose their hair. And people who undergo rapid weight loss—such as those who undergo gastric bypass surgery or have a gastric ring implanted—are also hair loss candidates.
Shapiro noted, however, that not all nutritional supplements are bad for your hair. “The recent surge in genetic premature loss encouraged me to find out what specific ingredient in certain supplements was having such a negative impact on hair.” Shapiro’s study will conclude that whey protein isolates in many nutritional supplements are the problem behind what’s causing users to lose their hair. The study will show that 80% or more did better on the Help Hair formula with categories of improvement in fuller, thicker, healthier hair compared to regular whey protein isolate, which resulted in a majority of participants reporting poor quality hair growth and even hair loss.
In response to this finding, Shapiro formulated a hormone-free powder that does not cause hair loss and supports hair growth naturally by providing all the nutrients hair needs to grow. The Help Hair formula is fortified with amino acids, and B vitamins, niacin, PABA, Chinese herbs and roots to support the structure and function of hair. Shapiro’s study will show that the formula has helped the hair of users look thicker, stronger and fuller.

I just had a baby a month ago. We donated blood from the umbillical cord that was used for medical research. Unfortunately most people don't know that blood from the umbillical cord can be used to save lives. It is usually discarded as medical waste. But, it can be used for research, treatment, and transplants. Cord blood can be used to treat 75 diseases including some cancers and lyphoma. In the future it could be used to treat disease like parkinson's and MS. I wonder why all obstetricians don't let women know how cord blood can be used. Families can also store cord blood to be used if their own child needs a transplant. I would like to see a show about the uses of cord blood and other stem cells. In the future could cord blood be used instead of embryonic stem cells? How are other stem cells obtained? I know there are other ways of obtaining stem cells for research and treatment. I would like to see a show that explains these procedures. I had the opportunity to donate cord blood two times. I am thankful for the chance to do something so simple that could save lives. When I tell other women about it, they are usually surprised. A lot of my friends didn't donate because they didn't know it was an option. I would like to let women know that cord blood can be used to help others, instead of being discarded.

My daughter truly is an inspiration! During birth, she became distressed and was taken by cesarean, but by then, she had swallowed meconium and had to be put on a monitor for her first several weeks of life. By the time she was taken off, she was back in the hospital, with a high fever. She was given a spinal tap. After three attempts, it was successful and it was a relief to find out she did not have the suspected meningitis, but roseola! Through her grade school years we learned she had apraxia, a small case of spina bifida (but not confined to a wheelchair) and a severe learning disability, dyslexia mingled with a few other things. She had very little muscle coordination in her face and throat and when she smiled, her whole body smiled because she would raise her shoulders just to grin! She took speech therapy and learned how to swallow with a series of therapy straws. Then, at age twelve she had another set back and we could have lost her again. She was in the hospital with salmonella poisoning and was already hemorrhaging under the skin. Through her stubbornness she is still with us.
Today, at first glance you wouldn't think she's been through all these challenges. She is a college student learning veterinary medicine. Even though she had a five pound tumor taken out of her last June 10th, the next week she was taking finals despite weakness and pain. I think that people who are ready to give up because they are learning disabled should reconsider. My daughter has the drive and determination to succeed and I hope it takes her far in life. Her dream is to one day work with racehorses in Kentucky.
In addition to all this, Katherine’s one time pediatrician, Dr. Marty Nygaard, has cerebral palsy. Somehow, he faced this challenge and became a physician. Maybe their stories can inspire others. I know my daughter Katherine is an inspiration to me.
Update: Yet, the story doesn’t end here. Katherine is engaged to be married April 24, in less than three months. Every several months, she amazes me even more with her "can-do" drive and positive attitude.
Here is the link to her surgery photos.

With the growing number of bariatric patients, I think this topic is relavent. I am a member of this ever growing population, I also am a member of facebook, and youtube, WLS communities (weight loss surgery) I recently have noticed a growing trend in the sheer number of uneducated people, whom either don't know what vitamins are vital to us or are lost on the amount and frequency. Education is the key. And I think some DR are UNDER educated on this subject and mis inform their patients. I don't think they do it intentionally but due to following "textbook" guiddelines, instead of real life examples. The knowledge is out there, but it really does need to reach these people, it can be a matter of life and death!
