Fairly often when shopping no matter what store, including health food stores, I'll find an outdated item. From sandwich meat to butter to canned Carnation Instant Breakfast to you name it. So, along with reading labels, look for expiration dates. Including in YOUR own cupboard and refrigerator. Any items I use as a guest at homes I check dates as well. I would want to be told if an item I had expired for it isn't polite to wear blinders... Speaking up CAN prevent illness.
I take extra steps too that I'd suggest for EVERYONE since life is a team effort. Bring to store(s)' attention and don't just set expired item back since someone else might get.
Any potentially unsafe condition you see in the store let management know. I've been doing this for years including reporting items spilled on floors etc. So nobody is injured and since I take seriously that life is a team effort and it does "take a village" and that village is us collectively "and" individually you and me.
[Almost died of food poisoning when three on hamburgers from a hamburger stand in Arkansas. Mother was told by Veterans Hospital doctor to walk with me all night until all impurities out of my system and not let me go to sleep because might not wake up.... (just thought I'd toss in)]
It is just as wasteful to eat more food than you need to not throw out. It can cause illness to cook spoiled food to not waste. If you think "What?" Nobody does this... think again. Don't waste/miss a chance to be healthier.
My fave scientists Louis Pasteur & Dr. John Snow were pioneers of PREVENTION IS THE BEST INTERVENTION: always a good rule of thumb. So make a date with checking dates. "If in doubt if food items still good throw it out." Don't just walk by any unsafe condition... report... including at friends and family's homes. If I notice no soap in bathroom or anyone didn't wash hands... I will speak up for all our benefits since PREVENTION IS THE BEST INTERVENTION.
