My son was six weeks premature as a result of a multiple pregnancy. I thought I had read all the literature about risks and what to expect with twins and had even expected to deliver early, but after my children were born my son became sick with NEC. We had never heard of this, but apparently it is very common in preemies. My son died two days after we were told he had NEC. We were told the bacteria attacks the organs that are not functioning well. After spending six weeks in the NICU with our daughter I learned more about vision problems, brain bleeds and developmental delays. Fortunately my daughter made it through and is now four years old. We are so blessed to have her. I think it would benefit the public greatly to understand being pregnant with and having premature twins can come with serious risks for both mom and child.

He has this condition in both eyes. Dr. recommend glasses but will never have 20/20 vision. Drs. have stated you can only correct your vision to the best you've ever seen, alot of people assume glasses get everyone to 20/20. One Dr. suggested glasses would help but eyes will not relax to let them do the job. Other Dr. said glasses will not help. On different web sites vision therapy is suggested but both Drs. didn't agree with this treatment.. I'm confused/scared about my sons situation especially about to apply to colleges. There are signs that I saw but missed importance of them. I would like all parents to notice eyes when following objects, sitting too close to tv all the time, if one eye slighty turns in (even very slightly ) when looking farther off, scared of heights, or walking up/down stairs, When learning to read acts like it is such a effort ( which I mentioned to teachers and drs. and no one caught it). This can really be helped if caught early or in preschool after that improved sight is not favorable. I would just like the next paraent to recognize this early. I had a lazy eye when a child but didn't know it was hereditary. Thanks for informing other parents before it too late for their child.

I'm a stay-at-home mother of two young children (4 & 5) and I am also a woman living with Lupus. At times it is very difficult to be a good mom while living with a chronic disease. I often worry about how it will affect my children to have an ill mother, along with dealing with immense guilt that I can not be a "normal" mother to my children. I'm sure that I am not the only one living with this tough situation, trying to balance my health with the raising of my children, and would love to see a segment devoted to this.

I recently gave birth to identical twins at 34 weeks gestation. I felt prepared because I was aware they were going to be early and I read numerous books on the subject, including The Premature Baby Book. Being in the NICU for over a month I found that many parents have no idea what to do and I was surprised by how many parents rarely visited their baby. My husband and I had to be very pro-active to insure that we could hold the babies as soon as possible and as much as possible. Having breastfed 2 babies prior to the twins, I had experience, but breastfeeding premature babies that have been in the NICU is completely different. All the nurses stated that most mothers give up on breastfeeding before their baby/babies even come home. I had lots of support from family, La Leche League, my pediatrician and a terrific lactation consultant therefore I was successful getting my twins exclusively breastfed. Most mothers do not have the support or knowledge to be successful and it is so important that premature babies breastfeed. Getting the knowledge out to the general public would help so many premature babies and their parents.
