I would like to see a frank discussion of the doctors' opinions on health care reform from a medical point of view and not a political point of view. I would like it to be free of special interest or sponsors official positions on health care reform. I believe many viewers here way too much political rhetoric and too little from the medical field. If the doctors are completely honest with their feelings, chances are they will have different opinions even among themselves. This would be fine as long as the viewers are getting their perspective to help us have a better understanding of their feelings on the subject. What made me interested more on the subject was listening to a doctor friend who has been in the medical field for thirty years and is very depressed about his self-employment family practice in a small rural town in southern Illinois. I tried to comfort him but really had no answers for him. His issues with his practice is multiple and if you want more details on the issue I would be glad to share, or I am sure he would be glad to share. THE DOCTORS SHOW BLOOD DRIVE

Fellow member, jesslwynn, that has topic about ITP.... needs platelets. So thinking when y'all do that show you could have a THE DOCTORS SHOW BLOOD DIVE too at malls like TV series ER did. I've donated blood twice and not been asked to donate platelets as I think the more experienced donors did since took longer a tech told me. However, would be nice to know the best possible tips for donating blood and platelets so others will want to and want to again. A tech told me for both and especially when donating for platelets good to have a big meal first. My first donating experience when I did that went better than second when had a light meal and time to donate delayed 2 hours. If that happens, my advice, have snack first. Yet LOVED the ER t-shirt so much "I was a HERO in the ER" that 2nd time I donated was stellar too. So nice too, to show appreciation to donors, with a gift sack. First time I just loved my hot pink arm band afterwards and strolled home with a TEXAS SIZED SMILE. Yet saw a HUGE crowd when ER t-shirts & gift sacks given out in appreciation. The news stations of channel ER on worked in conjunction with ER TV series since donating blood IS so important.

As a public health consultant I was amazed at the number of businesses and schools that were not prepared when the H1N1 virus began sweeping across our country last April. A number of my clients at the time (public health departments) were overwhelmed by requests from businesses and schools with assistance in helping them write pandemc inluenza plans. Needless to say, the public health departments were overwhelmed themselves and did not necessarily have the staff or the inclination to assist these entities in helping them create a pandemic inluenza response plan.

After some research and prodding from some professional collegues as well as from various other entities I created a website to assist in these endeavors. I created it as both a public service website that does have business and schools plans which can be acquired commercially (www.pandemicsupport.com).

That's when the fun began. In marketing my website I saw where a Harvard University did a study last summer articulating the amount of businesses that were not prepared. These were small business (defined as 500 employees or less). Many of these businesses acknowledged the devastating impact on their business if the CDC predictions of a 40% infection rate proved to be true. America is not alone in this. To name a few governments that also have this concern of businesses in their respective country's not being prepared were Canada, Ireland, Japan, China, Britan, France just to name a few. Many of the larger corporations do have plans in place, however the smaller ones could well be put out of business. Most of them take a wait and see attitude, "I'll wait until it impacts me", or "it's just a lot of hype", or "it's just about over now, why should I spend the money". It appears that they never looked at the pandemics of the 20th Century, 1918, 195 & 1968.

Schools were even more scary as far as I was concerned, I talked to schools in LA, TX, CA, MI, WI, OR, WA, VA, SC, AL, FL, just to name a few. The "pat" response from them is that "we're working with our local health department, so we're taken care of". None of those schools and districts I talked to had implemented a response plan. This was in September and October of 2009 long after the April 2009 infection rate began occuring in the U.S. Also, after they all had a summer to plan for it. Only a 1/3 of schools have nurses and they're not trained in emergency response. Not only that, nursing is a fixed science (similar to doctors) and they don't necessarily have the expertise in this field.

I continue to be shocked at the lack of assistance in planning efforts out there. Most states who flout HN1 planning assistance only provide a cacophony of links. Basically leaving it up to the entity to scour everything and choose what is important and what is not. If you look at the assistance the CDC offers, they basically provide recommendations for planning efforts but don't really give a concise step-by-step planning guidance that can be put together by "laymen" and immediately put into operational use. Again, this is not just in the U.S. but found through out the world.

I've had a number of people (one a school district in Ketchokan, AK) which "blessed" me for the work I was doing say "if you can save one child's life than everything your doing is well worth it, don't get discourage and keep up the good work". And that's what I'm doing. It's paramount that businesses and schools know what to do in order to mitigate the spread of this virus. Though nothing can prevent it (even with the vaccine it still takes over 4 weeks before it becomes effective) mitigation is our only defense.

If I could provide a plan to every school and every business throughout the U.S. and the world for that matter I would. More needs to be done with getting the word out for mitigation. In addition, by doing so, schools and businesses can then have the peace of mind that they are doing everything possible within their power. This also brings comfort to employees, students and their parents.

"My First Scrubs"

A show with audience children and... This would be a great way to get children interested in healthy choices. Children who go to show could receive scrubs in pink or blue or other colors with their name monogrammed on. And/or a doctor's jacket. Or with THE DOCTORS logo is what most might like.

Have a contest at LA schools, not just one, to write in questions for the doctors and in a random drawing pick audience. Then, everyone at their schools would be excited and could have a tape to watch at school assembly.

Or teachers could pick most unpopular children in school so they'd instantly be popular. A good way to interject Jay's anti-bully pledge too. Four for all levels of school: grade, junior high, high school and college.

Maybe there could be weekly passwords (example):

N.B. Principal or Teacher(s) from child's class accompanies child(ren). Can be nationwide. Up to y'all. Audience comprised of persons in each group. *thanks*

Random Drawing from each school participating so each school excited and each school sees video of show of age appropriate tips in a special assembly as many as there are studio audience seats at THE DOCTORS studio for each child and Principal or Teacher(s) attending with child(ren).

Also, might be best to have the questions anonymous when addressed ON SHOW so child not embarrassed. That's up to y'all too. You'd have name on questions... or a good time to say always speak up if you have a question because that's how we ALL learn. Those who ask are brave "and" smart. Y'all are good at that saying, "I use to wonder that when I was your age" etc. Might even inspire a few to be doctors. *bath*

(Revised since I think someone who originally had t-shirts as part of gift idea changed to scrubs. Plus could get expensive for entire audience to receive scrubs so some hand sanitizer with The Doctor's Logo would suffice as just being on The Doctors Show IS an honor in and of itself. Although, "my first scrubs" are darling on babies. Just Google Google Images to see "my first scrubs". Multiple posts DUE TO REVISIONS and since a stellar idea since THE BEST WAY to avoid many illnesses IS washing hands and since likely won't receive enough votes to win. What good is a good idea if not shared so sharing. Also, I am especially passionate SCRUB CLUB about since Louis Pasteur is my favorite scientist, since grade school, and he's who thought of germ prevention via sterilization etc.)

I feel that "The Doctors" is the prefect place to inform the public of new CDC & JACHO Breastfeeding guidelines coming in April of 2010. Also the fact that WIC is decreasing the amount of formula they will be providing a family each month.

Each state has Breastfeeding Coalitions to help promote & educate about breastfeeding. I had never heard of them until I was asked to be apart of one in my county. Governor Daniels has mandated that each county in Indiana have a BFcoalition. He has made BF part of his "In Shape" program.
I have had a passion about BF for 32yrs. Until now the only help I knew of was LaLeche League. Not to mention the law stating that work places have to provide a BF Mom who returns to work, a BF area for her to pump milk.
I work for a group of 5 OB Dr's. They do not mention BF until the post-partum visit. I now have our computer people building a form into our OB program so it will prompt the BF question during an OB visit. They also had no idea what a CLC (Certified lactation Counselor) or an IBCLC (International Breastfeeding Certified Latation Consultant) was. Nor did they care. In my area if a BF Mom calls her Family Dr. for help, she gets refered to her OB Dr. the OB Dr. says they delivered & they are finished with their job. So the poor Mom is left to her own devises, which usulally ends up with her switching to formula. It is so sad that society has made BF so difficult.
I know that Dr. Lisa has touched on the subject. But I feel strongly that the public needs to know about all the help that there is out there, & that the Government is on board with BF now.
The Doctor's show is on in our waiting area every day. I loved Dr. Lisa's Colpo show. If the public only knew how prevalent dysplasia & HPV is, it would boggle their minds. So now I can only pray that you will provide the same good information about the new CDC guidlines on Breastfeeding & the help that is available.

Would there be harm to the body to use Coumadin for 20 years or more? If the patient has been taking Coumadin for over two years now, it is possible to figure out what caused the blood clots in the first place or is it too late?
