Torn rotator cuff

The other day I slipped and fell while cleaning the bathtub (another reason not to clean ;)  When I fell, I tried to catch myself by grabbing onto the bar and hurt my shoulder horribly.  Have no idea what to do...I looked up all of my symptoms on the computer and everything leads to a torn rotator cuff.  I have an ache while just sitting here with my arms down.  But the minute I try to lift up my arm, it's as though I have a 50lb weight on my arm and I can't lift it. I'm having a heck of a time washing my hair, fixing my hair, putting shirts on...etc, etc.  I guess I need to go to the dr...but as many of you mom's know...getting ourselves to the dr is not a top priority when you have your children to deal with.

If any of you have any suggestions as to what I can do to make this feel better, I'd greatly appreciate it :)

Thank you!!!

Hi Srhoades, I'm sorry to read about what happened it sounds like you are in alot of pain my husband had torn his rotator cup about 2 years ago he lived with the pain for a long as he could then he just ended up having surgery and now he only has pain when the weather is cold. You should really make it a priority to go to the doctor your not going to be much help to your kids if it gets really bad . I know what pain my husband was in so I am sorry you are going through it. If you go to the doctor let me know what he said  and I hope you get to feeling better soon. Take care hope to talk to you soon.

It does sound as if you tore your rotator cuff, my uncle also tore his but unlike Veronica's husband he never went to the doctor and can no longer lift his shoulder past his collar bone, and this has been since high school that his cuff has been torn and he is in his 50's now. So please try to make it to the doctor for your health, because your boys need you and in order to take  care of your boys you need to take better care of yourself.

Please let me know what the doctor says and also how are your boys doing?

        Love and luck, Carrie

Hi. I tore 1 of the tendons in my rotator cuff of the right shoulder 4 years ago(there are 4 tendons in the rotator cuff). The tears can usually be seen in an MRI so it would be well worth a visit to the doc to get an MRI of that shoulder. At least you'd know.

If it is torn, the surgery can now be done by arthoscopy. I have 4 small incisions(1/2 inch) and 2 smaller ones from screws that were used. I was in a sling for 4 weeks and started PT almost immediately. It was well worth fixing. I now have no pain and a full range of motion.

See your doc and ask about getting an MRI so you know what is wrong. Nothing you can do at home will heal it. Once a tendon is torn, the only fix is to have it sewn together or like mine, the ends brought together and attached to the bone(ends were too frayed). For pain, use Tylenol or ibuprofen and don't sleep on that shoulder....makes it much worse. But that is all you should do until you know what is wrong.

gentle hugs..........Jenny
