The Fast Food Trap

I've been so brutally honest here, like no time in my life ... ever.  So it's time to talk about fast food, my very guilty secret.  I love it... I desire it... I yearn for it ... I am addicted to it.  There it is.  The truth.  I want the grease, the triple bacon, the double cheese, fried chicken, fries & gravy or better yet, poutine fries (for my American friends, that is fries and gravy with cheese - can't really believe you guys didn't think of this first it's so incredibly yummy, totally decadent and something  a chain starting with a McD might wish they had invented..... Anyway, it involves a white cheese like mozza only better its a Quebec creation:  they have awesome cheese - viva la belle province!)  Anyway, it is nutso good) I used to eat enough for two, maybe three people all by myself.  Why????  Because I have been eating it all my life and it is addictive.  Actual research studies have proven this, it's not just me saying it.  It is true.

I've been doing a little study of my own and have not been surprised to find that out of every commercial break in every popular TV  show there are at least two or three (that's modest, it is usually  more) fast food commercials.  Times that by say 8 to 10 commercial breaks ....  you get the picture.  I haven't tested this out with kids shows, but I have a funny feeling it may be worse.  And they flog cute toys along with the junk food.

We are inundated with this so it is no wonder when we are hungry we picture fries and a burger.  What do you think would happen if the commercials started doing the same thing we are doing now.... shopping from the perimeter of the store?

Wow - what a thought - commercials about the freshest fruit and veg deals at our local markets, the best fish, the finest meats.  Farmers are in so much trouble these days, being taken over by big corporations intent on making hamburger factories or something like that.  What might happen if instead of Happy Meals we learned about happy families around the dinner table, together eating local. fresh  food produced by their neighbors?  Maybe small farmers might have a chance, wouldn't that be a wonderful life.  My favorite movie by the way - probably no surprise to those who have been reading a while.

Anyhow, what a world that might be, how much healthier we all would be.  Don't know about you, but I'm getting older and I would like to think that the generation that is taking over the care of this world when I am retired is well informed, well nourished and ready to lead.  What do you want for your future?

Your honesty encourages others to do the same. I am a nervous eater. Initially, I can't get anything down but after an emergency when fear or anger are over, I eat to calm down, even if it is something I don't really like or want. Boredom is another trigger. I don't miss sweets and love fresh fruit and fresh vegetables but look out if there's bacon in the house. Beggin' Strips! I'd get it myself but I don't have thumbs!!!

So true, writerchick!

When it comes to commercials, many of us are like Pavlov's dogs--when he rang a bell, they began to salivate. When we see commercials, especially for fast food or other junk, we begin to salivate. So Melissa has the right idea--turn off the TV!
